On May 12, 1997, Seán Brown – devoted father, tireless chairman of Bellaghy GAC and friend of Seamus Heaney – was abducted from the club grounds and murdered in a killing his family has always described as state-sponsored. For almost thirty years, his widow Bridie and their six children have waged a dignified campaign against official obstruction for truth and a public inquiry.

This is the story of one man’s good life, a community’s loss, and a family’s unyielding fight for justice in the long shadow of collusion.

‘Above all, Seán Brown was a great human being – he is such a loss.

The Peer, The Priests and the Press.
A Story Of the Demise Of Irish Landlordism

📚Available online and in store at An Fhuiseog

"A stunning, revelatory work of reportage as Roy Greenslade turns his expert editor’s eye to an epic 19th century battle between an infamous Donegal landlord and an unsung crusading reporter. Picking sides in that scrap is easy … until you read this book." Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, former Lord Mayor of Belfast

"In the time of the Great Famine, people of all political stripes hailed Lord George Hill as an exemplary landlord for his ‘improvements’ in north-west Donegal. Yet, within a decade, priests, a journalist and the people who were his tenants exploded Hill’s reputation with a series of extraordinary allegations ultimately investigated by a select committee in Westminster. Roy Greenslade tells the story of Hill with style."
Breandán Mac Suibhne, author of The End of Outrage

6000 Days - Jim (Jaz) McCann

Jim 'Jaz' Mc Cann spent 6,424 days in total in the H Blocks. During that time Jaz was on the blanket. He details the brutality endured by himself and his comrades throughout that time. He also relates his decision to put his name down to join the hunger strike and the personal influences that subsequently made him withdraw. Anyone who was on the blanket at that time will understand that it takes courage to open up about this. Jaz later took part in the great escape of 1983.

A recommended addition to any collection that adds to the history of prison struggle.

This volume is the definitive biography of Liam Mellows, one of the most radical and intellectually questioning members of the 1916-1922 Irish Republican leadership. It is a standard source for the years 1916-1922, a period when Ireland experienced revolutionary turmoil, partition and Civil War. This revised edition includes a new introduction by Ruan O’Donnell, as well as the preface by Gerry Adams from the 2004 edition.

As Adams comments, the book offers ‘an incisive insight into the important 1916-22 period when the island was partitioned [and] … into the social and class politics which underpinned the Republican split on the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty’.

Desmond Greaves (1913-1988) was one of Ireland’s leading historians, and was also author of biographies of James Connolly and Sean O’Casey, as well as other works.

Ruan O’Donnell is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Limerick and former Visiting Chair of Irish Studies at Notre Dame University.

Gerry Adams was President of Sinn Fein from 1983 to 2018. He has published many titles on the social history and culture of Belfast as well as a series of memoirs.

The Invincibles

The Phoenix Park Assassinations & The Conspiracy That Shook an Empire
By Dr Shane McKenna

In an Ireland still reeling from years of famine, with tenant farmers being evicted and left to starve for their inability to pay exorbitant rents, revolutionary fervour was growing. An inner circle of the IRB was formed, a secret assassination squad within a secret society – the Irish National Invincibles. Their mission was to strike at the heart of British Imperial power, to kill the figureheads of Ireland’s oppressors.

On their way home from a triumphal parade through the city, Lord Frederick Cavendish and Thomas Burke, two of the heads of the establishment, were set upon and stabbed to death in the Phoenix Park. These killings would shake the Empire to its core, and shape the following decades of Irish history.
