THE LIFE CYCLE OF A RUNNER’S INJURY 🏃♂️😂
Stage 1: “It’s only a niggle.”
You feel something. You mention it to absolutely nobody.
Stage 2: “It’ll loosen off.”
You carry on running. Obviously.
Stage 3: “It’s fine when I’m running.”
It hurts walking, sitting, getting out of bed and putting your socks on…
…but strangely enough, fine when running. 🤔
Stage 4: The Google diagnosis.
You now have either a tight hip flexor, weak glutes, a torn meniscus or possibly terminal internet syndrome.
Stage 5: Someone gives you proper advice.
“Back off for a few days.”
“Reduce the mileage.”
“Get it assessed.”
Stage 6: “Yeah, I probably should…”
Does absolutely none of those things.
Stage 7: The injury gets worse.
“Right, I definitely need to do something about this.”
Stage 8: Rest.
You take 4 days off.
You feel better.
Stage 9: The great comeback.
You immediately run 10 miles because you’re “feeling good.”
Stage 10: 🤦♂️
Back to Stage 1.
And repeat. 🔄
Runners are brilliant at many things.
Following sensible injury advice apparently isn’t one of them. 😂
Listen to your body.
Listen to your coach.
Listen to your physio.
And if you’re thinking “but I’ve always run through it before…” — congratulations. That is not a rehabilitation strategy. 😜
