After transforming my body and life through fitness, I want to help others do the same. Online Coach and Personal Trainer at PureGym Bedford Heights

31/08/2026

Ten years ago, I lost 8 stone.

I didn't have a coach. I had a treadmill, a lot of guesswork, and a stubborn belief that I'd figure it out eventually.

I did, in the end. But it took me far longer than it needed to.

Every wrong turn I made, every plan I copied off someone whose life looked nothing like mine, every Monday I started over because Sunday went sideways, I remember all of it.

That's the thing about building a system from your own transformation instead of a textbook. You don't just know what works. You know exactly why people stop.

You know the version of you that stands at the gym door and talks yourself out of walking in. The one who eats fine all week and writes off Friday to Sunday. The one who's brilliant at starting and terrible at week four.

I was all of those people. So the Genesis System is built around them.

Custom training that fits your confidence level, not someone else's highlight reel. Nutrition that works around real food and a real week. And someone who actually knows your name when the motivation dips.

I built the thing I needed ten years ago and couldn't find.

You don't need to be fit to start. I certainly wasn't. ✅

If you want to see what a plan built around your actual life looks like, send me a message with the word GENESIS. It's a real conversation, nothing more.

I sat in the car park for 20 minutes before my first session.

I genuinely considered driving home. Nobody tells you that part.

I hadn't set foot in a gym in my life before I was 30. Every fear you can name, I sat with it in that car. Not knowing what to do. Feeling watched. The quiet shame of being the obvious beginner in the room.

Three things I wish someone had told me back then:

✅ Nobody is watching you like you think. I was convinced every person in there was clocking my every move. They weren't. Everyone was too focused on their own session to notice the new bloke in the corner. The second I accepted that, the whole room felt smaller and a lot less threatening.

✅ Not knowing what to do is fixable. I wasted weeks avoiding the place because I didn't want to look clueless. What I didn't realise was that a written plan in my hand, even a basic one, made me look and feel like I knew exactly what I was doing. Preparation kills anxiety faster than confidence ever could.

✅ Starting badly still beats not starting. My first few sessions were awkward, slow, and nothing like I'd imagined. I nearly quit after week two. But those messy early sessions built the habit that eventually made the gym somewhere I actually wanted to be.

The start doesn't have to be good. It just has to happen.

The gym gets easier every single time you show up, even when it doesn't feel like it yet. ✅

A client once told me she'd been skipping birthday cake for three years and still hadn't lost a pound.

Three years of saying no at parties. Three years of feeling like she was doing something wrong every time she wanted a bit of normal life.

The problem was never the cake. It was a plan that was never built for real life.

So let me say this plainly. You are allowed to:

✅ Eat at restaurants

✅ Miss a workout and carry on

✅ Have a slow week

✅ Not track every calorie

✅ Enjoy the summer BBQ

✅ Still be serious about your goals

None of these undo your progress. The all-or-nothing mindset does. It's the reason busy people quit at week four, long before they ever see what they were capable of.

Flexible nutrition is built into how Genesis works for exactly this reason. Eat real food, enjoy your life, still get results.

Want a plan that fits your actual life? DM me the word GENESIS and I'll walk you through how it works. No pressure and no pitch, just a real conversation.

Tuesday night Boot Camp at Priory Country Park 💪🔥

Another brilliant session tonight — hard work, plenty of energy and a group of people simply getting stuck in and getting it done.

That’s what these sessions are about. You don’t need to be the fittest person there, you don’t need to know what you’re doing before you arrive, and you definitely don’t need to “get fit first”. Just turn up, work at your level and I’ll take care of the rest.

We’re back at Priory Country Park on Friday at 6pm, or Bedford Park on Sunday morning at 8am.

Your first session is FREE — come and give it a go. 👊

Michael James Fitness has grown quite a bit over the last year, and there are now a few different ways you can work with me depending on what you need.

You can train with me in person with one-to-one PT, join one of my outdoor Boot Camps in Bedford, or work with me remotely through online coaching.

They’re different ways of training, but the principle behind all of them is pretty much the same: good training, sensible nutrition where it’s needed, support and accountability, and a plan that actually fits around real life.

And if you’re not sure which would suit you, just drop me a message and have a chat with me. 👍

"I just want to get a bit fitter first, then I'll start properly."

That sentence has kept more people stuck than any bad workout plan ever did.

It sounds responsible. Sensible. Like you're being smart about it. But what it actually does is push the start date out by months, sometimes years, while you wait for a version of yourself that never quite shows up.

Here's what I've watched happen with almost every Genesis client. They tell me they waited far longer than they needed to. Months. Sometimes years. And the ones sitting in front of me now, the ones who've actually changed, are the ones who started before they felt ready.

Because readiness doesn't arrive before you start. It shows up about two weeks in, when you've had a few small wins, when you've realised the thing you were dreading wasn't as bad as the version playing in your head.

The plan is what creates the readiness. Not the other way around.

If you've been waiting to feel ready, that feeling isn't coming in the post. Start the thing. The confidence catches up.

Most people pick an online coach based on their Instagram physique.

Six months later, they've had three check-ins and a PDF they never opened.

Online coaching is one of the fastest growing corners of fitness, and also one of the least regulated. From a sales page, every program looks the same. The difference shows up months in, when life gets messy and you need actual support.

After coaching many busy people through real transformations, I can tell you the programs that stick almost always come down to three questions nobody thinks to ask before they sign up:

✅ How often will you actually connect with your coach? Not "message anytime" in the small print. How often will they reach out to you?

✅ Is the plan built around your life? Your job, your kids, your travel, your knee that still complains on leg day. Or is it a template with your name pasted on top?

✅ What happens when motivation dips? Because it will. The right coach has a plan for the week you want to quit, not just the week you feel unstoppable.

Abs in a profile photo tell you what someone did for themselves. They tell you nothing about what they'll do for you.

Ask the boring questions before you hand over your card. Future you will be grateful.

Sunday boot camp ✔️

10 people. Two teams. Plenty of laughs, a bit of friendly competition, and everyone left having pushed themselves further than they thought they could.

You don’t need to be the fittest person there to start. You just need to turn up.

Every session can be adapted to your fitness level, and you’ll be surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you succeed.
Fancy giving it a go? Your first session is on me. Drop me a message and come and see what it’s all about. 💪

You signed up for the gym because that's what you're supposed to do.

Six weeks later, the bag stopped making it into the car. The membership kept charging. You started telling yourself you'd "get back to it" once work calmed down.

I've coached enough people through this loop to know the gym wasn't the problem. The environment didn't fit the life. Nobody asked the actual question before swiping the card: where will I genuinely show up three or four times a week?

Some of my clients thrive in a gym. They like the equipment, the separation from home, the small ritual of driving there and locking in. Others do their best work in a corner of their living room at 6am before anyone else is awake. Both build real strength. Both change bodies. Neither is more serious than the other.

The honest tradeoffs:

✔ Home wins on time, privacy, and consistency when life is full
✔ Gym wins on equipment variety and that "I'm here to work" headspace
✔ The best setup is the one you'll still be doing in March, not the one that sounds impressive in January

When someone joins the Genesis System, this is one of the first conversations we have. I build the program around your reality, not the version of you that exists on Sunday night planning the perfect week.

Pick the setup you'll show up for. That's the whole game.

08/07/2026

You're paying for a coaching program and still staying quiet when something doesn't make sense.

That's not respect. That's money you're leaving on the table.

I see it every week. A client nods along to a plan they don't fully understand, skips an exercise they were too embarrassed to ask about, or quietly falls off because life shifted and they didn't want to "bother" me with a reschedule.

So let me say this plainly. You are allowed to ask your coach:

✅ Can you explain why this exercise is in my plan?
✅ Can you simplify this nutrition guidance? I'm lost.
✅ Is this meant for the gym, or can I do it at home?
✅ My schedule blew up this week. Can we adjust?
✅ I'm not seeing progress yet. What should we look at?
✅ I want to change direction. Can we talk about it?

None of these make you difficult. They make you a real participant in your own transformation, which is the only kind that actually sticks.

Direct access to your coach is built into how I work for exactly this reason. Use it. The questions you're swallowing are usually the ones standing between you and the result you signed up for.
