This weekend at APEX, we’re joined by a man who redefines what’s possible after retirement.

Graham Keene retired at 56. Instead of slowing down, he walked the 630-mile South West Coast Path, then spent the next 16 years climbing on all seven continents.

In May 2022, aged 68, he summited Everest. The oldest Briton to ever do it.

Graham will be joining us this weekend, sharing his story with the APEX community in person.

Dreams don’t retire when you do. Neither do you.

Matt Gibson, 45, North Lincolnshire

Matt’s longest ultra to date is 50km with 2,000m of elevation. APEX Everest is a different beast entirely.

“APEX is full of firsts for me: my first 100km+ event, more than double the distance I’ve raced before, over four times the elevation gain, and my first time running through the night.”

Ask him about quitting, and the answer is simple:

“To be honest, quitting isn’t in my vocabulary.”

“Over the last three and a half years I’ve lost around 20kg, gone from being overweight and out of breath walking to the local shops, to taking on mountain ultras — and battled my fair share of injuries along the way.”

“One difficult moment on the trail doesn’t compare to everything it took to stand on the start line. I just keep moving forward, one step at a time.”

He’s doing this for the Huntington’s Disease Association, his wife, and their North Lincolnshire HDA support group — and everyone living with Huntington’s, including the families and carers alongside them.

“I’m also doing it for everyone who has donated, supported and believed in me, and to prove that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things. If my journey inspires just one person to get active, believe in themselves, or support a cause like the HDA, then every mile is worth it.”

“If I can get through this, I’ll know that the biggest limits we face are usually the ones we place on ourselves.”

Lee Holmes, 43, Skelmersdale

“It popped up on my feed and I thought wow. I explored it further and just reading it, my knees started hurting 😂”

“At that point I thought no way, but the itch wouldn’t go away — it kept coming up on my feed like it was calling me a p , so I thought fck it. Adam gave me a call, and that personal touch and his support — I booked.”*

Fair warning: the mountain doesn’t care how you got there.

“There is an end to this pain, but it’s not on my terms. The pain of failure or giving up is greater than the pain I’m feeling.”

“There are people out there that can’t do this — whether that be health, physical, or mental. So in a strange way, I am lucky to be up and down a beautiful mountain.”

Lee hasn’t done an organised challenge in over 15 years.

“I’m 43 with 3 kids. I want that feeling of accomplishment with something epic like this — not some mediocre 10k which any average Joe can do!”

And when it’s all over? No big speech. Just Lee:

“I’ve got to go walk the dogs tomorrow and go to work 😂😎”
