What a fantastic day we had yesterday at Woolley Miners Welfare celebrating our From Pits to Pitches project!

A massive thank you to everyone who came along and supported us. It was brilliant to see so many families, children, former miners, sportspeople and members of the local community coming together.

🎥 And finally, thank you to everyone who has shared their memories, stories, photographs and artefacts throughout the project. Yesterday was a fantastic way to celebrate everything we’ve collected and created together.

From the school children who have taken part, to the former miners who have shared their stories — this project is about all of you.

We couldn’t have done it without the support of our communities.

We’re looking for food vendors/catering vans to join us at our From Pits to Pitches Family Fun Day!

We’re open to ANY type of food – burgers, pizzas, hot dogs, loaded fries, street food, Caribbean, Asian food, desserts, cakes, ice cream… anything goes!

We're delighted to announce that The Seam will be headlining our From Pits to Pitches Family Fun Day at Woolley Miners Welfare on Sunday 23rd August.

The name couldn't be more fitting for our project! ⚒️

Fresh from playing Tramlines Festival, this talented young Barnsley band will be bringing their energy to what promises to be a fantastic day celebrating our mining and sporting heritage.

⚽ Sports activities for children
🎥 Our oral history films playing on loop upstairs, featuring the incredible stories shared by former miners and local community members.
⛏️ We're delighted that the National Coal Mining Museum for England will also be joining us on the day.

We'd love to welcome everyone who has been part of the project, especially:

❤️ Their families and friends

📸 This is your LAST chance to contribute to the project!

If you have old photographs, mining memorabilia, sports trophies, programmes, newspaper cuttings or any other items that tell the story of Barnsley's mining and sporting heritage, bring them along. We'll photograph and document them for inclusion in our digital archive.

🎤 If you've been meaning to share your story but haven't had the chance yet, our filming team will be there all day recording more oral histories. This is your final opportunity to have your memories preserved as part of the project.

Just a quick reminder that we’ll be at Grimethorpe Working Men’s Club tomorrow (Sunday 17th May) from 10am–12pm for our From Pits to Pitches filming day.

It’s really laid back — just pop in for a brew, a chat, and share a few memories if you’d like. No pressure at all!

If you’re a former miner, sports player, welfare member, or simply have stories, photos, or memorabilia linked to Grimethorpe, we’d love to see you.

We’re excited to announce that our next oral history filming day will be taking place at:

📍 Grimethorpe Working Men’s Club
📅 Sunday 17th

We’re looking for:
👉 Former miners
👉 Former local sports players
👉 Welfare members
👉 Anyone with stories, memories, photos, medals, or memorabilia linked to Grimethorpe’s mining and sporting heritage

This is your chance to help preserve Grimethorpe’s proud history for future generations as part of the From Pits to Pitches project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Your stories will help us build a lasting digital archive, inspire local school children, and celebrate the role mining communities played in shaping sport and community spirit.
