Barnsley had been the better side, dominating possession and playing some good football, but the finishing touch had been missing.

The Reds had led through McGeehan’s penalty, only to concede a cheap equaliser from a rebound. A frustrating scoreline given the balance of play.

Ravenhill couldn’t hold onto the rebound after a header had rattled the crossbar, and Sanderson was on hand to pounce and level the game.

Robin van der Laan arrived at Oakwell in July 1998, joining Barnsley from Derby County for £325,000.

Brought in by John Hendrie following our relegation from the Premier League, the Dutch midfielder added experience, steel and a real physical presence to the Reds' midfield.

Van der Laan made 67 appearances for Barnsley, scoring five goals, and was a threat from set-pieces with his aerial ability.

Sadly, persistent injuries took their toll and, in March 2001, he was forced to retire from professional football at just 32.
