Aphantasia is a neurological condition where a person cannot voluntarily form mental images. If you ask someone with aphantasia to imagine a red apple, they understand the concept, know it is red and round, and can describe its texture, but they cannot picture it in their "mind's eye."

Visual vividness exists on a wide spectrum, ranging from complete visual blindness to movie like mental clarity.

Key Characteristics

Conceptual Thinking: Instead of picture-based memories, individuals rely on facts, words, spatial maps, or abstract logic.

Not a Mental Illness: It is classified as a neurological variation, not a disorder or disability. Most people with aphantasia live completely normal, creative, and successful lives, many without realizing they experience the world differently until adulthood.

Variability: Some people have total aphantasia (affecting all internal senses, including the ability to replay sounds, smells, or physical touch in their head), while others only lack visual imagery.

Dreaming: Many people with aphantasia still experience visual dreams while sleeping, as involuntary imagery operates on a different neural pathway than intentional visualization.

Origins & Spectrum

The term was coined in 2015 by cognitive neurologist Dr. Adam Zeman, though the phenomenon was first described by Francis Galton in 1880.

ConditionExperienceHyperphantasiaExceptionally vivid mental imagery, nearly identical to real sight.Phantasia (Typical)Moderate ability to form internal visual pictures.HypophantasiaDim, vague, or highly fleeting mental imagery.AphantasiaComplete absence of voluntary mental imagery.

Most cases are congenital (present from birth), but aphantasia can occasionally be acquired later in life due to brain injury, stroke, or psychological trauma.

Every outdoor athlete falls into one of two mindset categories when assessing risk:

The Vague Awareness: "If I fall, I'll get hurt."

The Concrete Reality: "If I fall, I'll break my collarbone."

The second athlete visualizes specific consequences. They weigh the cost, feel the hesitation, and often back off, choosing a lower climb or grabbing the brakes on a steep trail. The first athlete can’t fully picture the severity, so they ride faster and push harder.

The difference? When a crash happens, the cautious athlete expected it. The fearless one is completely blindsided.

We here at Everything Awesome can help with these concerns, after decades of coaching adventure sports, and decades of working with people who have suffered life changing injuries we have techniques and systems that may help

Stunning colours, the dry weather for the past 2 months has brought out the purple heather beautifully.

Looking down over Grindleford, Tegness Quarries are an odd delight.

In my constant quest to climb in locations so obscure no one else is there today was one of those.

Not another person around.

Another ideal location for group sessions sourced, and only 5 mins from parking.

Find your way In a Day. Navigation introduction, Map and Compass Skills. – Peak District – Sheffield. - Everything Awesome 16/08/2026

https://www.everythingawesome.co.uk/product/find-your-way-in-a-day-navigation-introduction/

Unlock the secrets of the landscape and gain the confidence to explore the wilder side of the Peak District. This immersive, full-day course is designed to take you from “lost in the woods” to a capable navigator, trading paved paths for the freedom of the fells.

The Itinerary
We begin at 9:30 am at a Peak District Location. Following a brief round of introductions, we dive straight into the essentials: mastering map orientation and demystifying the anatomy of the compass.

By 10:00 am, we hit the trail. This is a highly active, practical session; aside from a scenic lunch break, we will be moving and learning until 4:30 pm.

What You Will Learn
The day is structured to build your skills progressively through hands-on experience:

Foundation Skills: We start with a live demonstration of core techniques, allowing you to practice in a controlled setting before we transition to more complex terrain.

Precision Interpretation: You’ll learn to appreciate the incredible detail of Ordnance Survey maps. We teach you how to “read” the environment, identifying subtle clues in the flora and stone that confirm your exact position.

Reading the Land: The afternoon focuses on contour interpretation. You will learn to translate the steepness and shape of the physical ground directly to the lines on your map, ensuring you never find yourself on the wrong side of a valley again.

Skills learned =

Core Navigation & Route Finding

Compass & Orientation: Accurately follow bearings, aim off, check linear features, take back bearings, and navigate around terrain obstacles while maintaining the original line.

Distance & Visibility: Estimate distance using timing and pacing across open terrain, compensate for discrepancies, and maintain accuracy in night or low visibility conditions.

Strategy & Error Recovery: Use coarse to fine navigation strategies and attack points, rapidly identify route errors, and execute relocation techniques.

Terrain, Planning & Safety

Terrain Evaluation: Identify dangerous or complex terrain on both maps and the ground to plan and execute safe navigational strategies.

Physical Considerations: Assess how personal fitness, fatigue, physical discomfort, and extreme weather affect route selection and safety.

Equipment Readiness: Select gear, clothing, and first-aid equipment tailored for open country in all weather conditions.

Access, Ethics & Environment

Environmental Impact: Apply the Countryside Code, respect access legislation, and use sustainable practices to minimize the impact of foot traffic.

Land-Use Awareness: Balance outdoor recreation with the needs of forestry, agriculture, and local conservation.

The day loosely follows the syllabus of the silver NNAS award.

Loss of a Crag

Gibraltar Rocks A small crag, above a farm, looking down over the village of Lower Bradfield, some bouldering, and a dozen or so trad routes in the easy grades. A bit of a gem. Unfortunately, their has been an influx of groups, leaving behind litter, knocking down walls, lighting BBQ. The result, a pleasant, but firm conversation with the land owner, a sheep farmer, rightly so he has lost patience with the constant hassle of rebuilding his walls, clearing rubbish etc....

Yesterday saw the end of access to this little Crag.
The landowner had recently caught a group lighting, a barbecue up there, and was sick of cleaning up litter and rubbish from thoughtless people.

He was pleasant but firm about banning access to the rocks on his land, but I fear the type of people who like the barbecue and leave behind litter won't take any notice of that anyway.
