Despite the popular misconception that Sensei Adam only has GI’s in his wardrobe, here’s photographic evidence to prove otherwise! 😂
Caught popping to the corner shop for a 10p mix-up, Sensei Adam demonstrates that even his relaxed weekend attire somehow manages to incorporate the essential YSMS red and black branding. 🔴⚫

Always representing… even when there’s a 10p mix-up at stake! 🥋😂

🥋 **SUMMER SIDE KICK CHALLENGE – WHAT AN ACHIEVEMENT!** ❤️

Earlier this year, we took on this year’s charity event — the **Summer Side Kick Challenge** — with a few expectations in mind. We had targets for the number of kicks we could complete and, of course, how much money we could raise.

Well… **you absolutely smashed them!** 🙌

Between everyone who took part, we managed a **massive 375,753 side kicks** and raised an incredible **£4,698 for Yorkshire Cancer Research!** 🎉👏

Recently, we were lucky enough to arrange a visit to the **Yorkshire Cancer Research** head office in Harrogate, where we got to see first-hand what they do and, of course, present them with our cheque.

What an impressive place! From their offices upstairs to the café and boutique-style shop downstairs, along with the donation centre at the back, everything is brought together under one roof. They also have on-site training facilities, as it has been recognised that fitness and physical activity can play an important part in recovery from cancer. It was fantastic to see the work that goes on behind the scenes and really brought home just how much the money raised can help.

A huge **THANK YOU** to every student, parent, family member and friend who took part, sponsored us, held pads, counted kicks, shared our posts or simply supported the challenge.

**375,753 kicks. £4,698 raised. One incredible YSMS team.** ❤️

But most importantly, **thank you to every single person who played a part in making this happen.** Whether you completed hundreds of kicks, donated £1, encouraged someone else, shared a post or simply cheered us on — **you helped make a difference.**

Charity events like this don't happen because of one person; they happen because a community comes together and gets behind something that matters. We are incredibly proud of what our YSMS family has achieved, and even more proud that together we've been able to support such an important cause.

**From all of us at YSMS — THANK YOU! ❤️**

**You kicked. You raised. You supported. You made a difference.** 🥋❤️

🎒 BACK TO SCHOOL — LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER ❤️

As schools return this week, there will be lots of excitement, new classes, new teachers and catching up with friends.

But for some students, going back to school can be difficult. They might be feeling nervous, lonely, overwhelmed or simply struggling to find their place.

We’re lucky to have some amazing students across all our classes, and one of the things we encourage through martial arts is looking out for others.

So, if you’re at school this week and you notice someone who seems to be struggling, take a minute to check in.

A simple “Are you OK?”, “Do you need anything?” or even just sitting with someone who looks alone can make a bigger difference than you realise.

You don't have to fix their problems. Sometimes, just knowing that someone has noticed and cares is enough. ❤️

Be the person who makes someone else's day a little easier.

A martial arts instructor can teach you techniques.
They can teach you discipline, focus, resilience and perseverance.
They can correct your mistakes, encourage you when things get difficult and show you the path ahead.

But ultimately, an instructor is nothing more than a signpost pointing the way.

We can show you the direction.
We can explain what lies ahead.
We can tell you what you need to do to reach your goals.

But we cannot walk the path for you.

That choice belongs to the student.

You can choose to follow the direction you've been pointed in, put in the effort, face the challenges and keep moving forward.

Or you can choose to stand still.

The instructor can open the door.
The instructor can point to the path.
The instructor can walk beside you for a while.

But only you can choose to take the next step.

That's what martial arts is really about.

Not being told what to do, but developing the discipline and determination to choose to do it.

🥋 We point the way. You choose whether to walk it.

The Meaning Behind Every Karate Belt

For others, karate belts may look like nothing more than pieces of colored fabric. But for a karate practitioner, every belt represents a chapter of hard work, discipline, patience, and personal growth.

The white belt represents the beginning—the moment a student enters the dojo with an open mind and a willingness to learn. At this stage, there is much to discover: basic techniques, proper movement, etiquette, discipline, and respect.

As the student progresses through yellow, orange, green, blue, and other levels, each new color represents more than a promotion. It reflects countless hours of practice, repeated mistakes, corrections from instructors, physical fatigue, and the determination to keep going.

A belt is never simply “earned” because someone is naturally talented. It is earned through consistent effort and the willingness to improve. Some techniques may take hundreds or even thousands of repetitions before they become natural. Some lessons require patience because progress does not always happen quickly.

The greatest lesson of the belt system is that everyone starts somewhere.

A beginner should never feel ashamed of wearing a white belt. Every black belt once stood exactly where that beginner stands today. The difference is that they continued training when progress was difficult.

The black belt, therefore, should not be viewed as the finish line. It is often the beginning of a deeper journey. A serious martial artist continues to refine technique, develop character, help others, and discover new weaknesses to overcome.

Most importantly, karate teaches that the real achievement is not the belt around your waist. The real achievement is the person you become while working toward it.

Every color carries a story.

Every belt carries sacrifice.

Every promotion carries responsibility.

And every training session is another opportunity to become stronger—not only physically, but mentally and spiritually.

For a young karateka looking at a collection of belts, those colors may represent dreams of the future. But the message is simple: do not wish for the next belt—work for it.

Train with humility. Practice with patience. Respect your instructors and training partners. Accept mistakes as part of learning. Keep moving forward even when progress feels slow.

One day, you may look back and realize that the belt was never the most valuable reward.

The journey was.
