Parkview 1st XI 0-4 Newry 1st XI
On Saturday, Parkview 1st XI hosted Newry 1st XI in their third game of the Linden Cup. Despite losing their captain early due to a head injury, Parkview started very well. The visiting team also picked up an early injury, and saw themselves go down to 10 men for some time. Using the space that was afforded to them, Parkview were calm in playing out from the back. But Newry offered a tough midfield battle and both defences were worked hard. In the second quarter, Parkview took it up a notch. Ben McFadden started off with a great ball that John Young narrowly deflected high and wide. A great team effort saw Parkview generate a few more solid chances as they looked bound to score but Newry held on. Still a big threat going forward, the visitors won a short corner and created half chances of their own before capitalising on miscommunication at the back from Parkview to score an easy goal for 0-1.
This stung Parkview who had so much of the first half momentum before the goal. The third quarter saw Newry pick up a second goal as a good strike found the netting for 0-2. Smelling blood, Newry kept pushing for a third goal, winning multiple short corners but not finding a way past Parkview's star keeper Stewart Smith. With one quarter left, Parkview had to go for it, fashioning more chances. One way or another, the ball just wasn't ending up in the Newry goal. With minutes left, a Newry attacker showed great skill, dribbling along the baseline before firing a reverse shot into the goal for 0-3. The visitors then came straight back at Parkview, winning and scoring a short corner on the blow for 0-4. A tough defeat for Parkview to take knowing that on another day they might have come away with a result. Wishing a speedy recovery to Stevie who required 12 stitches after his header in the first quarter. Congratulations to this week's man of the match, Dan Thornton and thank you as always to our sponsors Fisherwick Farm and Isabella Bathrooms!
