Ryvoan Fire – Lunchtime Update

I took this photo around lunchtime today after my run, and it's clear the fire is still spreading across the hillside. The scale is difficult to appreciate until you see it from a distance, with smoke continuing to rise across a large area beneath the Cairngorm plateau.
A huge thank you to everyone involved in tackling this incident. Hopefully the changing weather will help crews bring it under control soon.
If you're heading into the Cairngorms over the next few days, please check for any access restrictions and avoid the affected area. Above all, take extra care in the countryside while conditions remain dry.

A sobering sight looking towards Glenmore and Ryvoan Bothy this afternoon, we’ve just taken the picture from the shop here in Aviemore.

Thick smoke continues to rise above the forest as firefighters work tirelessly to tackle the wildfire. It’s difficult to imagine the impact on such a special part of the Cairngorms, with many favourite walking, running and cycling routes affected.

A huge thank you to all of the emergency services and everyone involved in protecting the area. Let’s hope the fire is brought under control soon, and that the landscape can begin to recover.
