🏏🦁 FROM ASHINGTON TO ENGLAND 🦁🏏
Ashington Cricket Club would like to congratulate one of our own, Mark Wood, following his retirement from international cricket.
There are very few moments in a cricket club’s history that can compare with seeing one of its youngsters go on to represent their country.
Mark Wood is one of those stories.
Before the England shirt, the Test matches, the World Cups, the Ashes and those famous 90mph-plus spells, there was simply a young lad playing cricket at Ashington.
Mark came through the Ashington Cricket Club junior set-up, developing his love for the game and beginning a journey that would eventually take him from the North East to some of the biggest cricket grounds in the world.
From making his England debut in 2015, to being part of England's Ashes-winning side, starring in World Cup campaigns and producing some unforgettable performances in an England shirt, Mark has given cricket supporters countless memories.
But for those of us at ACC, perhaps the thing we are most proud of isn't simply the number of wickets, the pace or the international caps... It's knowing that he came through our club.
Mark has never forgotten his roots. He has spoken proudly about playing cricket for Durham, England and Ashington, and the club has remained an important part of his story.
For every youngster currently pulling on an Ashington shirt, Mark's journey is proof of what can happen when you love the game, work hard and never give up.
From the junior section at Ashington Cricket Club... to the England dressing room.
From local cricket... to the Ashes.
From a young lad with a cricket ball in his hand... to an England international.
That is something everyone connected with Ashington Cricket Club can be incredibly proud of.
Mark, thank you for the memories, the excitement, the wickets, the laughs and, most importantly, for inspiring the next generation of Ashington cricketers.
Whatever comes next, you will always be one of our own.
