Arbroath Vics 1 Carnoustie Panmure 5 – 29 Aug 2026

Saturday saw Carnoustie Panmure check in at Ogilvy Park to meet Arbroath Vics in a McBookie.com Midlands League fixture.

Vics made several changes to the side that lost away to Kirrie Thistle in midweek with latest signing Sean Johnstone from Dundee North End in at left-back. Connor Gray and Lewis Quinn also came back into the starting 11.

Carnoustie made a couple of changes to the team that hit seven past Dundee St James in their last encounter with John Dye and Luke Benvie back in and Cain Buchanan and Lucas McWalter dropping to the bench.

The away side were quickly out of the blocks with Luke Benvie making ground on the left and swinging over a cross which Connor McFarlane, stretching to reach, could only head wide.

Sean Johnstone put Vics on the attack winning the ball around the half-way line and advancing into the box, but his run was halted by John Dye who came across to block him out.

Lucas McKimmie then tried his luck from distance, but his shot was easily held by Elliot Smith in the Gowfers’ goal.

In the 15th minute however, Carnoustie opened the scoring. Bruno Debembe and Rio Bradford worked the ball forward before a mix up in Vics defence allowed George Johnston to shoot goalwards. The ball looked to be going in but CONNOR McFARLANE made sure by getting the final touch almost on the line.

In a Vics reply, Lucas McKimmie sent a shot over the bar, but yet another mix up in Vics defence allowed Carnoustie to increase their lead in the 25th minute when GEORGE JOHNSTON took advantage to net.

The away side almost threw away their two-goal cushion right from the restart when a mistake in their rearguard allowed Kyle Fraser to run in on goal, but Elliot Smith managed to stick out a foot to block away the Vics players shot.

Despite that, Carnoustie looked the more likely to score again and a fine move involving George Johnston and Connor McFarlane saw the latter turn the ball back for Luke Benvie to send a shot just wide of the target.

Dean Easton then came to Vics rescue in the 30th minute, blocking away a Connor McFarlane drive after a sweeping move involving Pat Smith, Bruno Debembe and Innes Barbour had opened Vics up.

In a Vics attack, Lewis Quinn sent a diagonal pass out to Kyle Fraser on the left and when he played it back inside for Callum Grant his low shot from 22 yards forced Elliot Smith to dive to smother it inside the six-yard area.

With a minute of the half left only a goal line clearance form Liam Thomson prevented Carnoustie from taking a three-goal lead into the break. John Dye sent the ball over the top

of Vics defence where George Johnston helped it on for Innes Barbour to get away the shot which the backtracking Vics defender did well to clear at the expense of a corner.

Vics made a change at the start of the second half when Kyle Ramsay made way for Logan Whitelaw.

Dean Easton was the first keeper called into action in the second period, diving to save at the feet of Innes Barbour who had advanced into the box, with Vics eventually managing to clear their lines as the ball broke between the pair of them.

Vics began to enjoy their best spell of the match at the start of the second period and in the 55th minute hauled themselves back into contention by reducing the deficit. Callum Grant swung a corner over the far side of the box and CONNOR GRAY escaped his marker to head beyond Elliot Smith.

Carnoustie made a double change on the restart with Sam Clark and Connor McFarlane being replaced by Cain Buchanan and Finn Leddie.

Connor Gray was soon back on his defensive duties doing well to head a teasing cross from Bruno Debembe over his own bar before anyone in a Carnoustie jersey could get on the end of it.

Soon after, Finn Leddie pulled a corner back to George Johnston and when his shot broke into the path of Bruno Debembe, Dean Easton had to react smartly to push the number 14’s shot behind for another flag-kick.

However, in the 63rd minute, Carnoustie regained their two-goal advantage when Vics lost the ball in their own half and Innes Barbour advanced into the box where he was tripped by Dean Easton, diving at his feet for a penalty, which GEORGE JOHNSTON stepped up to convert.

Further changes saw Carnoustie send on Ben Christie for Innes Barbour before Vics replaced Ryan Napier with Nathan Ford.

Midway through the half a surging run from Pat Smith saw him get down the left before swinging a cross to the far side of the box where Finn Leddie sent it wide of the post.

Vics made a double change a couple of minutes later when George Nedyalkov and Lewis Grant came on for Sean Johnstone and Kyle Fraser.

The points were effectively wrapped up in the 74th minute when Carnoustie scored a fourth. Finn Leddie sent over an inswinging corner, which Dean Easton managed to claw away and when Jamie Hume attempted to clear it off the line the ball cannoned of CAIN BUCHANAN and into the back of the net.

Both teams made more changes with Carnoustie replacing Luke Benvie and Bryn Thomson with Matty Riley and Lucas McWalter in the 75th minute and Vics sending on Jamie Thomson in place of Lewis Quinn with 10 minutes left.

The scoring was completed in the 82nd minute when Carnoustie bagged their fifth of the afternoon. Finn Leddie blasted in a shot, which Dean Easton somehow got a hand to and when it came out to GEORGE JOHNSTON, he again did well to get a hand to it, but this time his luck was out as it looped beyond him and over the line to complete the Carnoustie number 10’s hat-trick despite a valiant attempt by Jamie Hume to keep it out.

There was one more bit of work for the referee to do when he issued a yellow card to Connor Gray just before the end when he took out Matty Riley down by the corner flag.
