Congratulations to Kevin Earl, who at the age of 68, successfully passed his Shodan (1st Dan Black Belt) examination on the 23rd June. Big thanks to those who helped Kev attain his goal. Oss!
Kev's journey:
'I first trained in karate in the 1970s before work and family commitments led me to stop. After a serious cycling accident in 2014 left me with a fractured neck of the femur (hip), I was determined to regain my strength and mobility. Joining Annan Shotokan Karate Club under the tuition of Alistair Mitchell, an 8th Dan in Shotokan Karate, proved to be one of the best decisions I have made.
I started with one-to-one sessions before progressing to regular club training. The structured stretching, movement and technical practice steadily improved my mobility, fitness and confidence. Over time, I was encouraged to return to belt grading system and continued to progress ever since, resulting in passing my 1st Dan Black Belt examination last week.
Now, more than five years later and approaching my 69th birthday, I feel stronger, fitter and more active than I ever expected. The club has a welcoming atmosphere, excellent instruction and a real sense of community. I would encourage anyone, regardless of age or previous experience, to give karate a try—you'll gain fitness, confidence, new skills and lasting friendships
