We’re delighted to share that our principal Chiropractor and Clinical Director, Philippa Oakley, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA).

ARMA is a UK-wide alliance bringing together patient-support groups, healthcare organisations and research charities to improve the lives of the 20 million people living with conditions affecting their joints, bones and muscles.

Almost one in five adults in Wiltshire reports a long-term back or joint problem. As many of our patients know, the impact can extend far beyond pain and movement, affecting sleep, work, family life, confidence and independence.

Philippa will bring to ARMA more than a decade of clinical experience, alongside her work in healthcare leadership, communication and inclusion. This includes her work with the British Chiropractic Association, NHS organisations, the General Chiropractic Council and international healthcare organisations.

Most importantly, her understanding of the everyday realities faced by patients at Acorn Health will help inform her contribution to ARMA’s work to improve care and make musculoskeletal health a national priority.

We’re incredibly proud of Philippa and look forward to seeing what she brings to this important role.

As a chiropractor, people often ask me about exercises, posture, sleep… and, surprisingly often, what I eat.
The reality? I’m a busy clinic owner and mum to a five-year-old. Some days breakfast is a rush, lunch happens between patients, and despite my best intentions, hitting my protein target doesn’t always happen!

That’s exactly why I love recipes like these.
It’s not about eating “perfectly” or following the latest food trend. They’re about having something nutritious, homemade and easy to grab when life gets busy, and the time together picking blackberries was 👌🥹 too.

These homemade fruity crumble bars are made with:
🫐 Homemade blackberry, blueberry & cherry compote
🥣 Rolled oats
🧆 Chickpea flour
🌻 Sunflower seeds
🌰 Chia seeds
🍯 Just a little honey

Each little square contains approximately:
✔️ 180 calories
✔️ 3.5g protein
✔️ 2–3g fibre
The oats, chickpea flour, nuts and seeds add fibre, healthy fats and a little protein, making them a more filling option than many shop-bought cereal bars. We had ours for breakfast with Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit, and they kept us going really well.

One thing I’ve learnt is that looking after your health isn’t about getting everything right all the time. It’s about making small choices that fit into real life.

For me, that’s having something in the freezer I can grab on my way to clinic, or offering my little’un something homemade instead of saying “no” to yet another request for an ice cream... 😅 (An understandable ask in the heatwave!)

These took about 30 minutes to prep before bed, freeze brilliantly, and have already made a few busy mornings much easier. Plus I can pat myself on the back when the kiddo wolfs them down! (Bluey and sunflower seeds, IYKYK 😏)

Learning never stops at Acorn Health. 💚

This weekend, Amy spent time at Health Sciences University completing an intensive Paediatric Fundamentals course. 👶

The course refreshed and expanded her knowledge of assessing and caring for babies, children and teenagers. It covered childhood growth and development, how movement changes as children grow, age-appropriate examinations, and recognising when chiropractic care may help—or when another healthcare professional is the right person to see.

So, why does this matter? 🤔

Children aren’t just small adults. Their bodies are constantly growing and changing, so they need an approach that’s tailored to their stage of development.
By investing in regular training like this, we’re making sure our knowledge stays current, our assessment skills stay sharp, and the care we provide continues to reflect the latest evidence and best practice. 🙌

If you think chiropractic care could benefit your little ones, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Whether it’s a tricky birth, childhood bumps and falls, delayed developmental milestones or something just not feeling right- we’re here to help! 💚

Most everyday movement happens forwards and backwards, so we often forget about the muscles that support us side-to-side. This exercise targets that lateral chain, including the muscles of the foot and calf, gluteus medius around the outer hip, the obliques, quadratus lumborum in the lower back and the muscles around the ribs.

These muscles form an important part of your core. Your core isn’t just your abdominal muscles- it’s the system that controls your pelvis, spine and ribcage as you move. The lateral core muscles help prevent you from collapsing or rotating too far when you bend, twist, carry something on one side or catch yourself after a sideways stumble. They’re crucial for core stability and need a bit of waking up. If you find you frequently feel your back twinge when twisting or side bending, this one is for you!

How to do it:
1️⃣ Set yourself up beside the wall as shown.
2️⃣ Drive your big toe firmly into the wall and keep pressing throughout.
3️⃣ Gently side-bend into a “banana” shape without losing that pressure.
4️⃣ Breathe steadily and hold for 20–30 seconds.
5️⃣ Repeat 2–3 times on each side.

Pressing your foot into the wall helps switch on the entire muscular chain from the ground upwards. Instead of simply hanging into a stretch, you’re teaching those muscles to stay active while they lengthen, building mobility, control and stability together.

Move within a comfortable range and stop if you experience sharp or worsening pain.

If your lower back repeatedly “tweaks” during twisting or reaching, get in touch. We can assess what’s contributing and help you build the movement and control your body needs.

What we do at Acorn Health is so much more than just pain relief. 💚

Because often enough, the pain isn’t the problem. It’s what the pain stops you from doing that brings you to us. It’s the impact on your life.

That’s why our treatment focuses on your goals- and what you want to achieve, not just “how is your pain today?”

Can you pick up your grandkids, are you back in the saddle, how is your posture feeling, are you stronger in the gym, do you feel less stressed?

Those are the things we help with. Relief from pain is just a part of that process.
