A little reminder that food is allowed to be about more than calories and protein.

Tonight was dinner at my absolute favourite restaurant - Mediterranea in Stirling.

A tiny, family-run restaurant that’s been here for years, serving the most incredible freshly made Mediterranean food. We shared a table full of mezze to start, followed by their gyros… and it was absolutely delicious.

And this is part of what I mean when I talk about building a lifestyle rather than constantly being “on a diet”.

Most of the time I’m thinking about things like getting enough protein, eating well, fuelling my training and looking after my health.

But sometimes food is about sitting round a table, sharing dishes, ordering the thing you really fancy and enjoying every mouthful of it.

You don’t need to earn it.
You don’t need to compensate for it tomorrow.
And one gorgeous meal doesn’t undo everything else you do.

Health isn’t built from one meal.

It’s built from what you do consistently over time, and there should absolutely be room in there for mezze and a massive plate of gyros.

When Seb started training with me six months ago, he wasn’t someone who already lived in the gym.

He has a job that involves sitting for most of the day and, before starting, most of his exercise came from a short walk in the evening.

He simply wanted to move more after work.

Six months later, he’s stronger than he ever expected to be, including hitting a 100kg deadlift

But as Seb says:

“The hardest part is just beginning.”

Because starting exercise can feel like a massive step when you’ve never really trained before.

You might think you’re not strong enough.
You might worry you won’t know what you’re doing.
You might look at other people lifting weights and think, I could never do that.

You don’t have to walk into the gym on day one and be able to do everything.

You start where you are.

You learn. You build up gradually. You get stronger.

And sometimes you end up doing things you never thought you’d be capable of.

Six months down, Seb. I reckon there are a few more “I never thought I could do that” moments still to come.

I hear versions of these all the time.

“I need to lose weight first.”

“I’m too unfit.”

“I wouldn’t know what I was doing.”

“I don’t want to get bulky.”

“I’m probably too old to start now.”

And I get why women feel like this.

For years, fitness has been sold to us as something we do to make ourselves smaller. Something we have to be “fit enough” to take part in. Somewhere everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing.

But strength training doesn’t have an entry requirement.

You don’t have to lose weight first.
You don’t have to be fit first.
You don’t have to be confident first.

And lifting weights isn’t about trying to look like somebody else.

It’s about building a body that is strong and capable. One that supports you through your 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond.

You’re allowed to walk into a gym exactly as you are today and start from there.

That’s the whole point.

57 years young. Lifting 80kg. And stronger than she ever imagined.

When Margo first came to me almost four years ago, her goal was simple: she wanted to get strong.

She was thinking about getting older, looking after her bones, staying physically capable and having the accountability to keep showing up.

Fast forward four years… and I think it’s safe to say she’s done exactly that.

But what I love most about Margo’s story isn’t just the 80kg she can now lift.

It’s the confidence in what her body can do.
It’s feeling more flexible and physically capable.
It’s training consistently for almost four years.
And it’s being part of a community where fitness is about so much more than what happens during an hour in the gym.

This is exactly why I’m so passionate about helping women build strength as they get older.

You don’t need to already be fit.
You don’t need to know your way around a gym.
And you definitely don’t need to think you’ve “left it too late”.

As Margo says herself…

“Do it now. Don’t delay.”

Thank you Margo for trusting me with your training for almost four years, and for sharing your story.

2 years in the Thrive team!

No client photo for this one because Donna is definitely happier staying behind the camera, but there was no way I was letting this milestone pass without celebrating her!

Two years of showing up, putting the work in and getting stronger and stronger along the way.

The strength gains over that time have been brilliant to see, but even more than that, I love seeing the confidence that comes from realising just how capable your body is.

Happy 2 year Thrive-a-versary, Donna

Here’s to plenty more PBs to come!

Turns out, helping women get stronger, feel more confident and realise that looking after themselves doesn’t have to mean giving up the life they enjoy is actually kinda chic.

Thrive was never meant to be just about workouts.

It’s about helping women understand their bodies, build strength, find a way of eating and training that actually fits their life, and have the support of a pretty brilliant community while they do it.

No extremes. No starting again every Monday. No waiting until life is less busy.

Just getting stronger, healthier and more confident, one step at a time.

Kinda chic, if you ask me.

I think one of the biggest mistakes we make after a holiday is believing we've somehow "ruined everything."

I used to think that too.

Now, I know a week away doesn't undo months of consistency.

I'm focusing on getting back to my normal habits, eating enough protein, training because I enjoy it, walking every day and letting my body recover from travel and poor sleep rather than punishing it.

That's what sustainable fat loss looks like.

If you've just been away, remember...

You don't need to earn your food.
You don't need to punish yourself.
You don't need to start over.

You just need your next normal day. 💚

2 YEARS OF THRIVING!

Leah is an absolute grafter. If I say, “This might make your legs sore tomorrow…” she’s already halfway through the set!

She’s one of the wisest people you’ll meet, keeps a cool head when everyone else is flapping, and is exactly the kind of person you want in your corner when life throws a curveball.

She’s also my unofficial energy drink buddy.

Leah, I’m genuinely so proud of how hard you’ve worked over these last two years. You’ve shown up, put the effort in, trusted the process, and never been afraid to challenge yourself. That’s why you’ve made the progress you have.

More than that though, you’ve become such an important part of the Thrive family. You lift everyone around you just by being you, and I’m so grateful you’re on this journey with us.

Thank you for the laughs, the effort and the dedication.

Happy 2-year Thrive anniversary! Here’s to many more sessions, many more DOMS, and probably many more cans of energy drink.
