A higher kick doesn't always mean a better kick π₯
When learning the side kick, beginners often make a few common mistakes:
π Leaning back to try to get the kick higher
π Losing power and control
π Looking down or away instead of at the target
And interestingly, these things are often connected.
In our martial art, Soo Bahk Do, we place a strong emphasis on personal development β learning to work with where you are now, while still working towards where you want to be.
You don't need to be naturally flexible.
You don't need to kick head height.
And you don't need to get everything right straight away.
π Start where you are. Build from there.
For our beginners, we encourage starting the side kick at a comfortable middle level:
βοΈ Get the foot position right
βοΈ Keep your eyes on the target
βοΈ Drive your energy forward
βοΈ Build control, balance and power
As their technique, balance and flexibility develop, the height can naturally increase.
That's what having an instructor is about β guiding our students through the steps, helping them correct their technique, and giving them the confidence to keep progressing and discover their potential.
Because martial arts isn't about being perfect on day one.
It's about becoming better than you were yesterday β mentally and physically π₯
