Did someone mention a tunnel from Merthyr to Aberdare to walk and ride through?

Yes please!

What's your thoughts?

Staring straight into another week, we’re back to Abernant Tunnel this morning in South Wales.

Several feasibility studies and general planning reports have been conducted over the years with a view to reopening this former railway tunnel as an active greenway.

“Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is seeking a design team for the transformation of the Abernant Tunnel into a new active travel route.
Thanks to Tim O’keefe for sharing this.
Residents in Merthyr Tydfil are calling for the reopening of the historic Abernant Tunnel as a key part of a new active travel route. The tunnel, which once linked Merthyr Tydfil to Neath before closing in 1962, could soon be transformed into a pedestrian and cycle path under plans led by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
Back in 2024, the council announced a search for a design team to explore the feasibility of refurbishing the disused 2.29km-long railway tunnel. The winning team will be awarded a £180,000 contract to conduct a study assessing options for the project, which aims to provide a safer, more direct route for cyclists and walkers between Merthyr and Aberdare.”

The most recent visit was back in April this year.

So my question to you all is, what are your thoughts about opening long railway tunnels as greenways? Would 20-30 minutes walking through this particular tunnel become boring ?

To put things into perspective Abernant Tunnel is 2,497 yards and not too far away is Rhondda Tunnel which is 3,443 yards, ongoing campaigns seek to open that tunnel as an active travel route too.

We're heading over to Wales for this week's Route of the Week - the Taff Trail! 🚲

The Taff Trail runs for 55 miles between Cardiff and Brecon, but can be broken down into much smaller sections if you're looking for a shorter ride. The Merthyr section is a great option for a quick afternoon trip. The section from Merthyr Tydfil mostly follows a disused railway line and crosses the spectacular Cefn Coed Viaduct, before climbing up to the reservoir at Pontsticill.

From there, you're rewarded with stunning views across the highest mountains in the Brecon Beacons.

Have you done this route before? 👇

Active Wheels are currently looking to expand their offering to those who would like to join in their inclusive rides.

Would you like to join their rides? Can you help them expand their offering supporting those unable to ride?

Let them know! :)

With the summer coming to an end we’re considering how we can support more people to join is on our inclusive social bike rides. One option is to look for funding to get an electric trike.

These are expensive so before we take this forward we need to be happy that there are people who will use an electric trike.

We’re keen to get bikes to support people of all abilities but also need to be confident that the bikes we get will be used. Our aim is that people who can’t ride a 2 wheel bike can join us on our rides to Aberfan, Pontsticill, The Windsor and the other rides we do.

If you would be interested in riding with us if we had an electric trike can you please let us know.

Can you please like and share this so it gets to as many people as possible. The purchase of an electric trike will depend on us getting sponsorship or grant funding so we need to demonstrate a need for it.

Important Announcement

A change of heart ❤️

A few weeks ago we announced that we were selling up. The amount of interest we have had in regard to the sale of the property has been huge but the amount of people offering to help us to stay has been even greater.

As a lot of you know, especially those close to us. We have faced so many obstacles since starting out in 2017. We have survived Covid and it’s impact, having to buy the building or the risk of losing the businesses, building maintenance costs, trail closures, and a lot of unexpected costs due to certain people “ripping us off”. We won’t go into detail in regard to this just yet! The biggest challenge of all we have faced as a family has been far greater, between us we have faced many health battles. This being the reason we decided to sell. To live our lives.

But Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre is our life … we are so passionate about it. We live and breathe it.

So … we have decided … WE ARE STAYING … the only way is up from here (and if we can get an “up-lift” from you all as loyal customers). If you can continue to support us while we get back on our feet. We are pretty sure that we can come out on top.

If there is any way you think you can help us at all we would love to hear from you 🩷 however big or small. Please get in touch.

Onwards and upwards 🙌
