Train such that:
- you always work on having the advantage by having your hands up and inside. If you have your hands inside, you will always have the possibility to execute defense and offense at the same time
- you don’t sacrifice big impact blows (elbow or whipping punches) to your most vital areas (head, neck, carotids). You take blows to those areas, and the light goes out

Here I showed my student that i can execute these attacks by relaxation and rotation of the body without having to worry about what his next move will be. I can even look elsewhere with zero worries

UPPERCUT IN WING CHUN: UNDERRATED?

I think the Wan Kam Leung Practical Wing Chun style is a refined one. We have 7 (or 8 depending how you count them) different punches: elbow in punch, elbow out punch, whipping punch, outer gate punch, throwing punch, uppercut… and you name it.
All these punches carry a specific technique to execute and are designed for specific situations.
In our style I have become a lot humbler because there is never a dull moment.
With that, I mean, often you or the opponent thinks they have the upper hand but never underestimate your opponent’s next move.
It is not because you move my hand sideways, that my arsenal of techniques is depleted.
The uppercut is in my eyes an underrated technique in wing chun. His other hand is neutralized as he will go nowhere with that one. Afterwards you can combine these with kicking, elbow strikes,….you name it. The sky is the limit!

The devil is in the details. A proper understanding of the techniques is important. Today, I see many « choreo-sifus » with « choreo-students »: they focus on the movement itself without understanding much of it.

It should be understanding it first and then execute the movement. Otherwise it has no sense. That’s why people are stagnating at some point: their sifu doesn’t explain and they themselves don’t understand

In Wing Chun, being ambidextrous is very important because of three main reasons.

The first one is because it is a simultaneous defense and offense art. There is practically no single defense movement itself. A defensive movement always goes hand in hand with an offensive movement

The second and related one is because you need to be prepared to launch an offense from both sides. And we are always stronger on one side than the other (right or left)

Third, power-training on both sides makes sure that you can exercice the same power and force in your punches or movements, regardless of side.

Eventually you will off course notice that one side is always weaker. However, the purpose is to equalize them over a longer period of time.

We see a lot of Masters able to demonstrate one thing with their strongest hand but not able to do it (not even in the slightest) with their other. So work on being ambidextrous

Same exercice. Different challenge. 20cm of difference. Stress test for your wrists. It creates strength in your wrist and forearms. Some never touched a long pole and think it is light. My students also wanted to test it. I told them they can use their body to support as well 😂

Same exercice. Different challenge. 20cm of difference. Holding it at the edge of the pole, is a total different exercice.

From the hand forms in Wing Chun to the Wooden Dummy to the Knives. A lot of practitioners do one thing in the forms and another thing in the dummy, pole or knife forms. Don’t forget: Wing Chun is a simple (but technical) martial arts….everything can be brought back to the forms.

Obviously no one walks around with butterfly knives but once you get the movements, you can easily apply it with kitchen or pocket knives.

The movements may seem obvious but you would be surprised that people can cut themselves while manipulating fast two knives at the same time 😉😏
