Via ferratas were created in the Dolomites for troops to get around the mountains during WW1. This means they have a different vibe to the other Vfs I've climbed, rich with history and facilitating large journies through these amazing mountains.

Sumaira and I went for the huge Punta Anna vf climbing almost 1000m to the summit of the 3rd highest summit here, Tofana di Rozes. Epic!

If you want to climb a classic mountain without anyone else there, then wait for snow and take crampons!

Returning to bed for a couple of hours this morning allowed the later and heavier than forecast snowfall to pass and we headed out in to the cloud. The snow covered rock provided a light taste of Scotland while the swirling cloud made for plenty of atmosphere.

Great work by our team of 8! And a fantastic way to complete a fun week together.

For me an ideal Alpine week will always embody a mix of high mountain and big rock climbing objectives. Here's a couple of great mountain rock routes we enjoyed last week on the Wiwannihorn and the Jegihorn, with Erik and Waldemar.

The traverse between the high peaks of the Lenspitze and Nadelhorn is a real classic and with strong reason. The rock is high quality the whole way and the positions are fantastic. Add to this the long Scramble to reach the Lenspitze and you have yourself a big classic day of Alpine scrambling.

This was a special day for Waldemar making it to half way through the list of 82 (uiaa) 4000m peaks in the Alps.

We were happy for a quick descent when electricity in the air made itself known with some ringing of our axes and poles!

Yesterday was a great day for Waldemar and me. A new 4000er for both of us and a step closer on his (and my) mission to summit all 82 4000m summits of the Alps.

A great, varied and relaxed feeling day in the mountains!

The summit of the Petit Jorasses after climbing 750m of granite with Stephan yesterday!

A really interesting fact about Stephan is that his grandad, Rudolf Peters, made the first ascent of the North face of the Grande Jorasses via the Croz spur in 1935 with Martin Meier! This was following a 3 day epic the year before when his climbing partner, Haringer, fell and died high on the spur. Peters didn't have any pitons left so chopped 20m off the end of the rope to leave behind and could never rap more than 20m as a storm raged!! Hardcore blood!
