GMDSS sea areas are not mileage rings on a chart.
A1–A4 are defined by which distress and safety service actually covers you — VHF DSC, MF DSC, or a recognized mobile satellite service — not by a fixed distance from land.
A few points worth locking in:
• A1 — VHF/DSC. Typically about 20–40 NM, depending on antenna height. DSC alerting is on Ch 70, not 16.
• A2 — outside A1, inside MF/DSC coverage. Often around 100 NM; can stretch further with conditions.
• A3 — outside A1/A2, inside the satellite system your ship actually carries. Inmarsat GEO is roughly 76°N–76°S. Iridium is global, poles included.
• A4 — whatever is left outside that ship’s A1–A3. For Inmarsat-only ships that is usually high latitude. With Iridium SES, A4 may not apply.
A1 and A2 limits are set by the coastal State. Your trading area still decides the radio fit.

* Trade Winds (0°–30°): Blow generally from east to west and are relatively steady, making them important for traditional sailing routes.
* Westerlies (30°–60°): Blow from west to east and dominate the mid-latitudes, influencing weather systems.
* Polar Easterlies (60°–90°): Cold winds that generally flow from east to west around the polar regions.

For mariners, understanding these wind belts is important for voyage planning, weather assessment, fuel efficiency, ocean-current awareness, and safe navigation.
