The Cardos‑sponsored Western Amateur Championship concluded yesterday at Nadi Airport Golf Club, marking another milestone in Fiji’s growing golf calendar. The tournament drew approximately 50 participants, including 23 players in the Elite Division competing for World Ranking Points.

The championship was dominated by Ishaan Shah of New Zealand, who delivered a remarkable performance. The 17‑year‑old shot five under par over 54 holes, finishing 20 strokes ahead of his nearest competitor. Shah had flown into Fiji just two days prior to the event, underscoring his dedication. His victory follows closely on the heels of his triumph at the Eastern Amateur at Fiji Golf Club two weeks earlier, further cementing his reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the sport.

In the Ladies Division, Raina Kumar showcased her consistency and skill, securing victory with a commanding margin.

The tournament benefited from excellent playing conditions, with the course presented in superb shape. Golf Fiji extends its sincere appreciation to the host club and its executives for their outstanding efforts in preparing the course, which greatly facilitated the smooth running of the event.

The Eastern Amateur Championship, sponsored by FijiCare Insurance Limited, unfolded over the weekend with all the hallmarks of a premier sporting event. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as ninety starters took to a course that was in pristine condition, aided by favorable weather that set the stage for two days of exceptional golf. The format was demanding yet fair: elite golfers contested 54 holes, while juniors, ladies, and B and C grade competitors played 36 holes, ensuring that every division had its moment to shine.

The men’s championship was defined by the brilliance of Ishaan Shah, who only arrived in Fiji from NZ last week to pursue world ranking points through both the Eastern and Western Amateur Championships. Shah’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he carved out an eight under par over 54 holes, a score that placed him well ahead of the field. His dominance was clear, and his victory not only secured the title but also positioned him to receive valuable World Amateur Golf Ranking points once the scores are officially tabulated. In second place stood Fiji’s top-ranked amateur, Shakil Pillai, who finished at two over par, a strong showing that underscored his consistency and resilience.

Other divisions produced their own stories of triumph. Ravinesh Goundan claimed the A Grade overall net title, while in the ladies division, Raina Kumar emerged victorious with a gross score of seven over par. The B Grade saw David Whitehead secure the overall gross win, with Praneel Chandra taking the net honors. In the C Grade, Ashwin Nand captured the gross title, while Hamzah Hussein prevailed in the net category. Each of these victories reflected the depth of talent across Fiji’s golfing community.

Beyond the immediate competition, the championship carried added significance as the second trial event for Fiji’s team selection for the Pacific Games in Tahiti next year. Several players—among them Raina Kumar, Shakil Pillai, Ravinesh Goundan, and Jainendra Prasad—earned crucial ranking points, strengthening their prospects of representing Fiji on the international stage.

The event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of FijiCare Insurance Limited, whose support was warmly acknowledged by Golf Fiji. Special appreciation was extended to Mr. Aniketh Singh, Senior Marketing Officer, who addressed the players and presented prizes on the final day, adding a personal touch to the celebrations.

With the Eastern Amateur Championship now concluded, attention shifts to the Western Amateur Championship, scheduled for July 11th and 12th at Denarau Golf Club. The momentum from this weekend’s success promises another thrilling contest, as Fiji’s golfers continue to showcase their skill, determination, and passion for the game.
