Ovalau Cousins Begin a Shared Journey at FNU

From the quiet village of Bureta in Ovalau (Levuka) to the vibrant learning environment of the Fiji National University’s Koronivia Campus, cousins Charles Fisher and Walosio Koyanasau are embarking on a new chapter of their lives together.

The two were among the students attending orientation at the College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) on Tuesday, marking the start of their academic journeys at FNU.

Charles Fisher will be pursuing a Diploma in Forestry, a field he believes is vital for the protection and sustainable management of Fiji’s natural environment.

“Forests are more than trees; they are our heritage and our future. I want to gain the knowledge and skills to help protect our land and ensure it is used responsibly for generations to come,” Fisher said.

His cousin, Walosio Koyanasau, will be studying towards a Certificate in Fisheries, a choice influenced by his connection to the sea and the role marine resources play in island communities.

“Coming from Ovalau, the ocean is part of our daily life. Studying Fisheries will help me understand how we can use our marine resources wisely and support our communities without damaging what we depend on,” Koyanasau said.

Both cousins said starting university together has given them confidence as they transition into student life away from home.

“Having family with you makes the journey less intimidating. We can support and motivate each other when things get challenging,” Fisher added.

Koyanasau echoed the sentiment, saying, “This is a big step for us, and sharing it with my cousin makes it even more meaningful.”
