Meet one of the reefâs most fascinating (and fearless) residentsâthe Triggerfish đ
They may look playful with their bold patterns and curious eyes, but donât be fooledâthese reef guardians have personality and attitude.
⨠Fun facts about triggerfish:
⢠That tiny âtriggerâ on their back? Itâs actually a locking mechanism. When threatened, they wedge themselves into coral crevices and lock into placeâmaking it nearly impossible for predators (or divers!) to pull them out.
⢠Theyâre surprisingly intelligent and territorialâespecially during nesting season.
⢠Instead of guarding a flat area, they protect a cone-shaped territoryâso swimming up is often the best escape route!
From the striking beauty of the clown triggerfish, to the sheer size and power of the titan triggerfish, to the bold lagoon triggerfish that isnât afraid to swim right up and tell you youâre too closeâevery encounter is unforgettable.
Curious, clever, and sometimes a little confrontational⌠triggerfish remind us that the reef is alive with personalities as unique as its colors.
Dive in and meet them for yourself with Dive Fiji Oneta. đ

Welcome to the soft coral capital of the world, here, the reef doesnât just grow⌠it blooms.
Fields of Dendronephthya soft corals rise from the reef like underwater gardens, bursting in every imaginable colorâelectric pinks, fiery oranges, deep purples, and soft pastels that seem almost unreal. With every passing current, they sway in unison, turning the ocean into a living, breathing canvas.
Unlike hard corals, these delicate structures donât depend on sunlight to survive. Instead, they feed on plankton drifting through the water, thriving only where currents are strong and constant. Without movement, they simply cannot existâmaking every vibrant colony a sign of a healthy, dynamic reef. Their extraordinary colors come not from algae, but from their own natural pigments, giving them an intensity that feels almost otherworldly.
Drifting past them feels like entering a different realmâone shaped by motion, color, and flow. A place where the reef doesnât sit still, but dances.
This is Fiji at its most alive.

Today weâre celebrating a very special milestone here at Dive Fiji Oneta. đ
Lizzie has officially completed her Dive Master trainingâand what a journey it has been.
This path asks for more than just skill. It takes dedication, humility, perseverance, and a deep respect for the ocean. From mastering swimming and dive skills, to guiding certified divers through the breathtaking beauty of the Great Astrolabe Reef, Lizzie has shown what it truly means to grow into this role.
Sheâs been there for new divers taking their very first breaths underwater, helping them move past fear and discover a whole new world beneath the surface. Calm, focused, and always encouraging.
A natural team player, Lizzie brings a bright smile to every dive, along with a genuine passion for the ocean and its protection. Her knowledge, awareness, and love for conservation shine through in everything she does.
Weâre incredibly proud to see her step into this next chapter. A rising star, and a beautiful soul in and out of the water. đżđ
Congratulations, Lizzieâyour journey is just beginning.

Mantas are back on station â and itâs happening just minutes from Oneta Resort.
Less than a 3-minute boat ride away, along the Great Astrolabe Reef, our resident manta rays are returning to one of their regular cleaning stations â a site where reef ecology and animal behavior come together in the most fascinating way.
For divers and snorkelers, this is more than just an encounter. Cleaning stations are critical micro-habitats where manta rays slow down and hover in the current, allowing cleaner wrasse and other small reef fish to remove parasites, dead tissue, and bacteria. Youâll often see mantas circling with precision, lining up into the current, even queuing for their turn â a clear sign of their intelligence and learned behavior.
What makes this experience exceptional is the access: calm, shallow conditions ideal for snorkelers, and the ability to observe natural behavior without pressure or crowding. No fleets of boats, no rush â just you and the mantas, interacting on their terms.
These are highly intelligent, social animals â curious, aware, and completely harmless. As they glide overhead in slow, deliberate movements, you begin to notice the subtle details: cephalic fins unfurling, body posture shifting with the current, occasional eye contact that feels surprisingly intentional.
For those who understand the ocean, this is the kind of dive or snorkel that stays with you â not for the adrenaline, but for the connection.

Sun-soaked days, ocean adventures, and unforgettable moments đâď¸
What an incredible week here at Dive Fiji Oneta with this amazing group of adventurers from the US! From sunrise to sunset, these energetic ladies made the most of every momentâdiving and snorkeling daily, exploring vibrant reefs, and embracing every adventure our island has to offer.
When they werenât in the water, they were off hiking lush trails, kayaking to hidden waterfalls, and discovering remote beaches. Even a little fishing excitement made its way into the weekâcatching GTs and releasing them back where they belong đđ
Evenings brought us together with kava, music, laughter, and stories shared under island skies. So many smiles, so much joy, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Vinaka vakalevu for bringing such warmth, smiles, and beautiful energy to our island home. You are now part of the Oneta family, and we canât wait to welcome you back again đ´đ

Ever feel like you're not the main character when you dive the Great Astrolabe reef? đ
Thatâs because the real VIPs are already there⌠the white tip reef sharks đŚâ¨
Friendly, graceful, and just a little bit nosey, these locals have a way of stealing the spotlight. One moment theyâre cruising effortlessly alongside us in the blue, the next theyâre curled up on the rocky bottom like they own the place (which, letâs be honest⌠they do).
And if you look closely under those massive table corals? You might just spot one or two snoozing peacefullyâcompletely unbothered by our bubbles drifting overhead.
Theyâll often follow along for a while, quietly observing their finned visitors. No rush, no fussâjust pure reef elegance.
Itâs encounters like these that remind us why the Great Astrolabe Reef isnât just a dive site⌠itâs a living, breathing world full of personality đ
Thank you for the great pictures!

đ Vinaka Cisco & Martine,
Weâre pretty sure one week is officially not enough time at Oneta⌠and it sounds like you agree đ
Thank you so much for your amazing review â we loved having you both here! From exploring the Great Astrolabe Reef to making the most of life on the island (and yes⌠helping us keep up with the cookie supply đŞ), it was a real pleasure to share it all with you.
Our team will be so happy to hear your kind words â they really do love getting to know each guest and making everyone feel at home.
The only problem now is⌠youâve left, and the reef is asking where you went.
Weâll be ready when you figure out your return plan â more dives, more ocean time, and of course, more cookies waiting.

Descend slowly⌠and leave the weight of the world behind.
Here, in the limestone canyons of the Great Astrolabe Reef, it doesnât feel like the ocean anymoreâit feels like drifting through space.
You hover between towering walls like an astronaut between silent galaxies, suspended in perfect stillness. Every breath becomes your rhythm, every fin kick a gentle glide forward⌠no gravity, no rushâjust the quiet sensation of floating through something vast and timeless.
Beams of light cut through the blue like distant stars, illuminating pathways that feel untouched, almost otherworldly. Youâre not just divingâyouâre orbiting through an underwater universe carved in stone.
đ¸ Big vinaka to Francisco Garcia for capturing these moments.
