Riding Days 20 & 21 – Ha Giang Loop
Adventures🏍🇻🇳🇻🇳😍😍

The famous Ha Giang Loop — and for good reason. These mountain roads are legendary, with jaw-dropping, lush green peaks all around and a route so winding that at times, I could practically see my own taillights ahead of me. It’s an unforgettable ride through some of Vietnam’s most dramatic scenery.

We’re not the only ones who’ve found this gem, though. The loop has become a rite of passage for backpackers too — especially Westerners riding pillion on Vietnamese drivers’ scooters. Not gonna lie, it looks a bit funny seeing a tall white guy perched on the back seat like a touristy sack of potatoes. But hey, to each their own.

The main roads are actually in decent shape and great fun to ride, assuming you’ve got a motorcycle license. That said, license or not, you might still get flagged down. We got pulled over by the police at least five times in two days — even got breathalyzed one morning! Seems like they’re keeping an eye on things up here.

The backpacker crowd tends to party hard — late-night karaoke, shots of corn liquor with their local drivers... Makes you wonder how it feels to hop on the back of a scooter at 9 AM after a night like that. Still, it’s great to see local riders getting steady work. Every traveler with a driver means one more job for the locals — and that’s something to appreciate.

Ajopäivät 20 ja 21. Ha Giang loopseilla. 🏍🏍🇻🇳🇻🇳

Nämä ajomaastot on maaiömankuuluja eikä syystä.

Days 14 & 15 on the Road – Over 2,500 Kilometres Behind Us🏍🏍🇻🇳🇻🇳

After descending from the lush heights of Kon Tum, we found ourselves entering Vietnam’s lowlands once more. The HCM Road unfurled ahead of us—wide, straight, and stretching confidently toward the north and the capital, Hanoi. As we ventured further, the traffic, especially the number of lorries, began to swell noticeably. Fortunately, speeds remained mercifully moderate, allowing our little Honda to weave through the convoy with surprising ease.

Instead of heading directly to Hanoi, we made a deliberate detour—pausing about 90 km south in the charming village of **Tam Coc**, famed for its riverboat excursions. Here, hundreds of skilled rowers—steering with their feet, no less—glide tourists through surreal limestone landscapes straight out of *King Kong* movie. Despite a few critical reviews that painted the area as overly touristy, we found our 90-minute river cruise to be utterly serene.

The days have been *blisteringly* hot, pushing up to 38°C at times. On the bike, my summer riding gear (courtesy of Finnish Rukan) does the job—as long as we maintain speeds over 50 km/h. At a standstill, however, it's sweltering enough to feel like one might melt on the spot, clothing or no. I was especially skeptical about my black riding trousers, fearing they’d turn into a personal sauna, but they’ve proven surprisingly comfortable in motion.

Yesterday, we turned westward to begin our loop around **Northern Vietnam’s majestic highlands**. Hanoi will have to wait—we won’t be rolling into the capital until the 20th of July.

You can follow our journey and detailed route on Polarsteps (link in the comments). This leg of the trip has been nothing short of spectacular to ride.

Travel Day 13 🇻🇳🇻🇳🏍🏍

We woke up early this morning, knowing we had over 200 kilometers to cover—and with plans to visit the world-famous caves of Phong Nha along the way. Unfortunately, the river was running too high today, so all boat tours were cancelled. While it was still possible to reach the caves on foot, we decided to skip the sweaty jungle trek and hit the road instead.

Leaving Phong Nha, the Ho Chi Minh Road quickly widened into a straight, smooth highway. Despite the traffic—mainly long, American-style semi-trucks—we made excellent time and reached our accommodation by 3 PM. A quick shower and a refreshing dip in the cool pool was the perfect way to wrap up the day.

Jalkaisin luoliin pääsisi kyllä, m***a kuumassa viidakossa
samoilun sijaan päätettiin lähtä tien päälle.

HCM road muuttuikin Phon Nhasta leveäksi ja suoraksi valtatieksi, joten matka taittui niin ripeästi, että jo kolmelta oltiin majoituksessa, vaikka amerikkalaistyylisiä pitkiää puoliperärekkojakin oli paljon tien päällä . Pikasuihku ja sitten pulahdus viileään uima-altaaseen kruunasi päivän. .
