England men have qualified for the play-off stage at the World Championship Pre-Qualifier in Ljubljana after defeating Georgia 11-1 this evening. Tomorrow morning they play Slovenia with the result of that game likely to decide who finishes 1st and 2nd in the group as the last games for both teams are against lowly opposition in the shape of Serbia for England and Lithuania (Slovenia).
Finishing first is an advantage as it means that you get 2 chances in the play-offs to qualify for the next stage. First plays the first team in the other group and the winner goes to the World Championship Qualifier while the loser then plays the winner of the game between the 2 second placed teams for the second qualifying place.
Meantime the England women won a hard fought battle against France by 9-8 after an extra end and with a game to play against Poland they still have a chance of qualifying if they beat Poland and the other games tomorrow go a certain way!
By the way that win against France was only the 4th time in 21 games that the women's team have beaten them stretching back to the first game against them in 1976.
