Addis Ababa waste management project wins global award for a decentralized composting project.

Addis Ababa city’s decentralized composting and recycling waste management project on Wednesday October 19, 2022 wins this year’s C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards held in in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Soil and More Ethiopia, a for-profit implementing company, initiated this project starting from the concept for the project to the implementation phase and job creation. We created over 2,000 green jobs in the process.

This composting project, which was a brain child for Soil and More Ethiopia, has minimized the amount of solid biomass that was used to be dumped at the Addis Ababa city’s only land fill, REPI Landfill.

The project that was started two years ago focused on utilizing the biomass waste that comes out of fruit stores and markets and converting it to an EU standard compost by using a techniques called CMC (Controlled Microbial Composting). This decentralized composting was implemented in all sub cities of the city with over 2,000 individuals trained and supported by Soil and More Ethiopia.

These compost producing SMEs were also provided with a sustainable market linkage with Addis Ababa beautification and green development office through the facilitation of Soil and More Ethiopia.

In recognizing the efforts and contribution of Soil and More Ethiopia, the Addis Ababa City Government awarded Soil and More Ethiopia on a ceremony held in Addis Ababa Millennium hall with her Excellency Mrs. Sahelewerk Zewede, President of the Federal republic of Ethiopia, handing over the recognition award.

How Compost Helps Your Soil
• Compost contains nutrients that your plants need for optimum growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. And it’s an especially good supplier of micronutrients that are needed in small quantities and are sometimes overlooked by gardeners, such as boron, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. The more varied the materials used to make the compost, the greater the variety of nutrients your compost will provide. In some situations, you will not even need to fertilize soil enriched with compost.
• Nutrients are released at the rate your plants need them. In early spring, as your plants are slowly starting their growth, the microoganisms in compost are slowly releasing nutrients. As the weather warms up and your plants begin rapid growth, the microorganisms also work faster, releasing more food for your plants. Isn’t nature wonderful?
