IS YOUR TEACHER MEAN?
MEAN IS NOT THE SAME AS TOUGH.

I am a demanding, exacting teacher with high expectations of my students and myself. I speak candidly and directly. I try not to infuse too much of my own emotions into my tone.

Occasionally, students and their parents have confused that with being mean.

Don’t make that mistake.

Mean teachers insult students, belittle them, and punish them.

Demanding teachers tell students exactly what they expect, and in a forthright, calm way, point out when they’re not meeting their potential. They also offer students suggestions and guidance on how to meet their potential.

Any teacher can be one or the other. Or both. But they are not the same thing .

Nobody benefits from a teacher fawning over a student’s work, when there has been no effort or improvement. Even young students are smart enough to know when an adult is being insincere. Show students the respect of your honesty.

Teachers can be kind and make vigorous demands of their students at the same time!
