Since posts have slowed for the offseason, we thought we’d provide some helpful info. On the path to the Bubbly Pool on JVD there are a few rocks with greenish spray paint that is hard to read. After several years of visiting, we noticed them for the first time a few weeks ago near the final decline headed down to the pool area/the initial incline when leaving the pool. Once back at the boat, our crew began to research the few words we could decipher.
Turns out it is The Manchineel Tree (also called Death Apple Tree), one of the world’s deadliest trees.
It’s extremely toxic, causing severe burning and blistering. Online sources recommend not touching any part of the tree and not to stand under it during rain. If you have contact, never rub your eyes (could cause temporary blindness), wash with soap and water, and if the reaction becomes severe, seek medical treatment.
