The Spanish national team, 2026 FIFA World Cup champions, can now proudly wear two stars above their badge!

The tradition of adding a star for each FIFA World Cup title dates back to 1970, when Brazil added a third star to celebrate their victories in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Every World Cup-winning nation has adopted this tradition, and today it has become part of the identity of World Cup champions and is recognised by FIFA in its regulations regarding official team kits.

Although Spain and Argentina are two of the greatest national teams in the history of football, they have only faced each other once at a World Cup. ⚽✨

It took place on 13 July 1966, at Villa Park (Birmingham), during the group stage of the World Cup in England.

Argentina won 2–1 thanks to a double from Luis Artime (photo 3), whilst Pirri (photo 4) scored Spain’s goal. La Albiceleste progressed to the quarter-finals, where, curiously, England – the eventual winners of that World Cup – went on to defeat Argentina.

That match between Argentina and Spain brought together two spectacular generations of players. ⚽🙂Argentina boasted stars such as Antonio Ubaldo Rattín, Luis Artime, Oscar Más, Ermindo Onega, Roberto Perfumo, Jorge Solari, whilst Spain fielded legendary players such as José Ángel Iribar, José Ufarte, Pirri, Luis del Sol, Gento and Ballon d’Or winner Luis Suárez.

60 years later, Spain and Argentina are set to cross paths once again at a World Cup.

Although Spain lost that 1966 match, in the most recent friendly between Spain and Argentina in 2018, La Roja thrashed La Albiceleste 6–1. Across all 14 encounters – both official matches and friendlies – the record could not be more evenly balanced: six wins for each side and two draws. 👏👏

Mexico 1986 – José Luis Brown’s torn shirt 🔥🔥

In the 1986 World Cup final, José Luis Brown put Argentina ahead with a header from a cross by Burruchaga.

He also created one of the most legendary images in World Cup history. In the second half, he dislocated his right shoulder following a heavy collision with Dieter Hoeness, but refused to leave the pitch. He then decided to cut a hole in his shirt and improvise a sling, immobilising his arm to endure the pain and carry on playing. ⚽✨

Argentina, managed by Carlos Bilardo and led by Diego Maradona, defeated West Germany 3–2 and won their second World Cup.

That shirt with the hole in it became, forever, a symbol of courage, sacrifice and dedication in a World Cup final. 👏👏

Mexico 1970 – The save that defied the impossible 🔥🔥

Here we have one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of football, England’s Gordon Banks.

In the group stage of the 1970 World Cup, England and Brazil played out one of the most memorable matches in the history of World Cup goalkeeping. England were defending their title following their victory in 1966, whilst Brazil were already a dominant force in world football, having won the tournament in 1958 and 1962.

In that match, Pelé produced a powerful header that looked like a certain goal, but England’s goalkeeper Gordon Banks made an extraordinary dive to tip the ball over the crossbar. The save was so spectacular that Pelé himself shouted ‘goal’, convinced the ball had gone in, and, years later, he left this famous quote for the history books: ‘I scored the goal, but Gordon Banks saved it’. ⚽✨

Brazil went on to win 1–0 thanks to a goal from Jairzinho, but Banks’s save went down in history as “The Save of the Century”, considered to be one the best save of a World Cup. 👏👏

South Africa 2010 – The goal that changed Spain’s history 🔥🔥

Spain won their first World Cup by beating the Netherlands 1–0 in the final in Johannesburg.

In the 115th minute of extra time, Andrés Iniesta scored the most important goal in the history of Spanish football following an assist from Cesc Fàbregas. ⚽✨

The team managed by Vicente del Bosque, featuring Casillas, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Puyol, Villa and Busquets, capped off a once-in-a-generation side that had already won Euro 2008.

That goal made Iniesta an eternal legend of world football. 👏👏

Mexico 1986 – France’s victory over Brazil 🔥🔥

In the quarter-finals, France knocked out the Brazil side featuring Sócrates, Careca, Júlio César and Zico following an unforgettable penalty shoot-out, in one of the best matches in World Cup history. ⚽✨

During the match, Michel Platini missed a penalty that would have secured victory for France, whilst Joël Bats saved another from Zico, who had come on in the second half.

In the decisive shoot-out, Sócrates (photo 3) and Júlio César missed for Brazil, and Platini missed his own before Luis Fernández (photo 4) converted the decisive penalty to send Platini’s generation through to the semi-finals.

For many, it was the greatest international victory of that extraordinary French side and one of the most memorable matches in World Cup history. 😎👏👏

This German footballer had the compelling personality to dare to play for the three big Spanish clubs and come out on top. ⚽⚽💪

• Born in 1959 he was one of the best midfielders of the 80s.

• He started playing in 1976 with FC Augsburg and FC Koln until 1980.

• At FC Barcelona (1980 -1988) he won 3 Spanish Cups, 1 Spanish League and 1 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. He coincided with Maradona, with whom he was friends and with Cruyff as coach. ⚽✨

• In Real Madrid (1988-1990) of Butragueño and his fifth, he played 2 seasons including the season of goal records at that time. He won 2 Leagues, 1 Spanish Cup.

• At Atlético de Madrid (1990-1993) he won 2 Spanish Cups, one of them against Real Madrid where he scored a goal. 👏🔥

• From 1993 he played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen until 1995. He retired in 1997 after playing for San Jose Clash in the United States and Pumas UNAM in Mexico.

• At a very young age, he won the 1980 European Championship in Italy with Germany 🔥🔥 (photo 6) . But due to disagreements with his national team, from the age of 23 he no longer played. A pity because this prevented him from having more impact at world level for a player of incredible talent.
