The Traka

These are our forests.

Two weeks ago, here in Les Gavarres, 2,300 of the massif’s nearly 29,000 hectares burned. It hurts — but the forest is still standing.

And it’s not just here. Europe has spent weeks trapped under an omega block: a dome of hot air locked between two low-pressure systems, shaped like the Greek letter Ω. The atmosphere can’t renew itself. Heat builds. From Portugal to Greece, forests are burning.

But heat alone doesn’t explain it. For centuries, farming, herds and firewood kept these forests in balance. When that life left, the fuel stayed. The forest doesn’t need to be left alone. It needs to be lived in.

To the firefighters, the military emergency unit, civil protection and every neighbour who stayed to defend their home: thank you. You held the line.

Cork oaks are built for fire. They sprout again from their own bark — the same bark that still gives cork in Les Gavarres today. They will return. So will we.

The future of our forests belongs to everyone who loves them, rides them, lives them. In Girona, in Europe, anywhere in the world where there’s a trail you care about.

We’ll keep coming back. And we’ll watch them grow again, season by season.

We all arrived here carrying a story behind us.
And it is these stories that make us different.

But today, we wanted to remember four people who did something different.
Something special, unique and difficult for us to forget.

And you are all an important part of every edition.
