First league game back and we took on the current league champions in Oriol Athletic, by no means an easy task for any team in this league, but with the new regime and committee in charge there was a new feel within the squad and an air of positivity not seen at Daya for a while.
With a full squad, the management team decided on a new formation of 5-2-3. The starting line-up consisted of Maycon in goal, a new addition for us. The 3 central defenders were Rob in the centre with Doyler and Aaron either side. Wide of these were Jacob on the left and Mark on the right. Samuel and Piotr had the big task of enforcing the central midfield, with Jonathan starting up front with Fowler and Johan either side of him. With the work put in through pre-season, everyone knew their job.
With the game getting underway, typically Oriol saw a lot of the ball, but this didn't faze Daya, who were working hard and frustrating Oriol, limiting how far up the pitch they allowed them to work the ball. The first 15 was very promising for Daya defensively, but they just couldn't find that last pass in the final third to cause problems.
20 minutes in and Oriol finally found a way through the stubborn Daya defence when a lovely chipped ball over to our left side found their winger before crossing in, and a neat finish into the bottom corner put us 1-0 down.
History normally predicts Daya's heads going down and the floodgates opening, but not this time. 25 minutes and the ref blows for a water break, where Daya put to use the roll-on, roll-off rule. Coming on was Antonio, sitting in the centre of the 3 defenders for Aaron, Tony replacing Jacob, which meant Piotr moving into left back so Tony could sit with the ever-consistent Samuel, and Chris making his league debut, coming on for the Swedish magician Johan.
The last 20 were two teams feeling each other out, with neither side producing any chances. With half-time coming, Daya were standing strong and with the new half came more substitutions. Niko, also making his league debut, came in for the stalwart Mark Doyler.
The second half started and Daya were keen to try and get out of the blocks nice and early. Oriol were also doing the same by trying to work the ball in behind, but with skipper Rob, Antonio and Niko, all these were thwarted before any danger could begin.
Samuel was like a prime Kanté, not a blade of grass missed, but seeing the ball enough to remind him he was playing football. Daya produced a nice couple of chances that unfortunately didn't see the back of the net, with new signing Douglas seeing the ball wide and Tony seeing his chance sail over the bar.
The football was positive, but as any good team does, they punish when under pressure, and that's what happened when Oriol attacked from Daya's right side with a cross. A cleared header then bounced off a defender's knee and, typically with our luck, to the winger's feet 8 yards out from goal. 2-0, but this didn't deter Daya. If Oriol were going to score another, they weren't going to have it easy.
A third did come, but this time from a corner, something Daya normally deal with, but this time the attacker was allowed a run with no one marking and headed the ball into the net.
Full-time and although Daya may have lost 3-0 away to the current league champions, everyone involved can be proud of the performance they all put in. 90 minutes of football and only 1 clear chance in the whole time. Anything behind was cleared up by the back line, the midfield worked like their lives depended on it and the lone striker did a great job chasing and hounding.
A new season with many positives for the management to work on. This could be a great season for everyone involved.
No rest, as this Sunday we take on potentially the second-best team in the league in Jacarilla.

We thank Oriol for a tough but great game and wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season! 💪⚽
