What doed learning to surf seriously mean ?
This is a subject close to our hearts, because in recent years, with the number of surfers increasing dramatically, we’ve noticed that more and more surf schools are tending to offer “mass-market surf lessons” instead of quality instruction.
This is evident on social media; I’ve seen countless videos of beginners* taking surfing lessons on reefs in Indonesia, being pushed by an instructor directly into a wave, without a controlled takeoff, board control, or the ability to observe what’s happening around them, as if there was not maybe another surfer on the wave.
These images, along with direct observations of the skills of our students who come to Aloha Surf Academy saying “I’ve already taken lessons in Indonesia or Sri Lanka,” irritate us and make us question what kind of service our “competitors” are actually offering, since they’re simply providing a consumer service.
First and foremost, our priority is safety. That’s the number one reason why we don’t rush things!
A beginner doesn’t belong on a reef. We start gently, on small, whitewater waves, and little by little, we progress, gaining technique and confidence, and eventually go for our first green wave! And what a feeling it is, because surfing can be ungrateful, it is not an easy sport, but how beautiful that is to see our evolution through the time. Getting our first board, riding our first reef waves, it is such a winning and high accomplishment !
For those who are false beginners or low intermediate surfers, no problem, we continue to work on technique because there’s always more to learn. But we see the same thing with trainees who already have some experience when they come to Aloha. Have you noticed that your instructor teaches you a technique they don’t even use themselves? Start observing; does the instructor use the same take-off technique they teach you when they surf, and the same posture we tend to call “poo-poo”?!
