“When is Someday?”

It was a question Josh von Holst wrote on his surfboard before he and Vanessa left their home in B.C., packed up their 1994 Land Cruiser and pointed it south.

What followed was a journey that would take them tens of thousands of miles through Latin America, all the way to the southern tip of South America.

There were breakdowns, border crossings, unfamiliar places and plenty of moments that didn’t go according to plan. But along the way, there were also unexpected friendships, shared meals, incredible acts of kindness and experiences that challenged many of the assumptions they had before leaving home.

The decision to go came from a simple realization: there may never be a perfect time to chase the things you’ve been dreaming about.

“Money can always be made later, but time can’t.”

As the miles added up, the trip became about much more than the destinations. Josh and Vanessa found themselves thinking differently about people, community and what it means to live a successful life. The scenery was unforgettable, but it was often the ordinary moments and the people they met along the way that stayed with them most.

“Our trip changed the way I see people. I genuinely think 99% of the world is kind. If you lead with kindness, you’ll get it back.”

Now back home in B.C., they’ve carried those lessons with them. Slow down. Spend time with the people who matter. Stay curious. Be open to different perspectives. And don’t assume that “someday” has to be somewhere far off in the future.

Meet Josh and Vanessa von Holst of in the latest edition of Well Lived, our series about cool people doing cool things and the different ways they choose to spend their time.

Pack it like a box, travel with it like a bag. Wide mouth packing means no lost space in the corners, and no digging blindly because the top won´t open enough to see what´s in there. You add our packing system, cubes and organizer panels to this and you have a modular packing set up that will change the way you travel. Separate clothes into activities, have all your tech on an organizer panel, use a packing cube as a wash bag or washing bag. However you choose to build your system, RUX provides the framework and you make it your own.

The problem with gear isn’t gear. It’s everything that happens between adventures.

The packing. The unpacking. The digging through bins. The forgotten gear. The constant shuffle from home to vehicle to trailhead and back again.

In Part I of Tony’s Vault, RUX founder Tony Richardson takes us back to the original problem that helped inspire RUX and the early thinking behind building a better system for managing the gear that gets us outside.

Because the goal was never just to build a better box. It was to spend less time sorting, searching, packing, and repacking, and more time actually using the gear we love.
