Marcus or Chrisoula K? (The Tile Wreck)
​There is an ongoing controversy over the true identity of the "Tile Wreck" at Abu Nuhas. Both the Chrisoula K and the Marcus ran aground at the exact same reef, carried near-identical cargoes of Italian floor tiles, and shared a remarkably similar silhouette.
​According to maritime records, the Marcus suffered steering failure and struck the reef of Abu Nuhas during a storm. The sheer weight of her cargo wedged her firmly into the reef structure, and the vessel was ultimately declared a total constructive loss.
​Today, remains of the bow section can still be seen on the shallow reef top, with the starboard anchor chain clearly visible. The main body of the wreck sits upright down the reef slope; while the bridge has collapsed, the remaining structure offers excellent swim-throughs for divers. At a depth of 27 meters, the stern rests listing to starboard with its propellers still intact. Hard corals now encrust the hull, while a notoriously massive grouper is often spotted guarding the wreck. Interestingly, divers can still read the Italian manufacturer's name—"Figli di Stefano Faro"—stamped clearly on the floor tiles still stacked neatly inside the cargo holds.

Shaab El Erg, widely known as the Dolphin House, is a massive horseshoe-shaped reef located 25 km north of Hurghada (directly east of El Gouna). The open end of the horseshoe faces due south, creating a sheltered lagoon, though it can still offer a challenging dive when sea conditions pick up.

​The site features a flat sandy bottom at around 12 meters that gently slopes down into a vibrant coral garden. The reef boasts stunning hard coral formations, particularly in the channel/tunnel between the main reef and Gota Shaab El Erg. You'll also find impressive coral pinnacles to the north and a distinct coral tongue stretching along the west side.

​The absolute highlight of this reef is its resident pod of Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins. On calm, warm days, sightings are almost guaranteed as they often enter the lagoon to rest and socialize. If visitors respect the code of conduct—keeping noise to a minimum and avoiding chasing them—these curious creatures will often approach and swim alongside you naturally.

​Due to its popularity, day boats from El Gouna and northern Hurghada visit frequently, and it remains a signature stop on almost every Northern Red Sea liveaboard itinerary.

Eagle rays are cartilaginous fish commonly known as rays. Rays (which include stingrays, manta rays, electric rays, and eagle rays) comprise over 600 species across 26 families, sharing a close evolutionary link with sharks. They are easily distinguished by their flattened bodies and enlarged pectoral fins that are fused to the head.

​Most ray species live on the seafloor, mainly in warm and tropical coastal waters, using specialized sensory pores called the Ampullae of Lorenzini to detect the faint electrical fields generated by prey hidden beneath the sand. Once detected, species like eagle rays use their flat, plate-like teeth to effortlessly crush hard shells, crabs, and mollusks.

​While many rays prefer bottom-dwelling lifestyles or deep ocean environments, a few species, such as manta rays and eagle rays, inhabit the open ocean. Unlike their benthic relatives, eagle rays swim gracefully through the water column by flapping their broad pectoral fins like bird wings, and are even known to leap completely out of the water.

The SS Dunraven was built in Newcastle, launched in 1873, and powered by both sail and steam.
​In April 1876, while on her return voyage from Bombay to Newcastle laden with spices, cotton, and fine china, she reached the Red Sea approaches to the Suez Canal. Thinking they were further up the Gulf of Suez than they actually were, the Captain and his 25-man crew sailed the ship straight into Beacon Rock at Sha'ab Mahmoud .
​The crew worked frantically to dislodge her, but 14 hours after striking the reef, she slid off, capsized, and quickly sank upside-down into 25 meters of water. The crew was safely rescued from their lifeboats by local fishermen/dhows.
​Known for decades by early divers as the "Porcelain Wreck" due to the abundance of English pottery scattered across the seabed, the SS Dunraven now rests fully inverted, offering divers a unique, cave-like swim-through past her massive boilers and engine room.

The Red Sea's Deep South offers some of the most phenomenal diving in the region, featuring world-class sites such as Zabargad Island—famous for hosting one of the world's oldest ancient Peridot (topaz) mines—alongside the iconic St. John’s reef system. Highlights include Habili Ali, Gota Kebira, Gota Soghayr, Habili Gaffar, Dangerous Reef, Abu Basala, and the natural labyrinth of El Malahi.
​What sets the Deep South apart is its unique underwater architecture, offering a thrilling mix of shallow offshore reefs (Gotas) and submerged pinnacles (Habilis). Because the peaks of Habilis lie just below the surface, they act as natural magnets for strong currents and large pelagics.
​Divers can explore a pristine ecosystem featuring arguably the best soft and hard coral formations in the Red Sea, nourished by nutrient-rich upwelling currents. The topography is a playground of tunnels, overhangs, and swim-throughs. A crowd favorite is St. John’s Caves (Umm Khararim), a shallow network of caverns where sunlight pierces through overhead openings, creating a surreal, cathedral-like laser show underwater.
​Thanks to exceptional visibility, abundant reef fish, and deep drop-offs, action is guaranteed. The brisk currents attract pelagic predators like Grey Reef, Hammerhead, and Thresher sharks, as well as massive schools of jacks, barracudas, and mackerel.
