Chaitra Shukla Pratipada is on March 22 and marks the beginning of Spring and the new year!
The new year starts with Chaitra Navratri, nine days of worshipping Divine Mother Durga, in her nine forms, introspection, devi puja and meditation.
Durga was born fully grown and absolutely gorgeous from the sankalpa of all the male gods who couldn't defeat the demon Mahishasura. They gave her all their strengths and weapons. Durga, embodying their collective energy, is both derivative from the male divinities and the true source of their inner power.
She is also greater than any of them.
Durga presents a fierce menace to her enemies. She is usually depicted riding a lion and with 8 or 10 arms each with a weapon given to her by the gods to kill the buffalo demon.
