Brilliant comparison captured here of how a barefoot running technique compares to a heel strike running technique.

When you run naturally, your foot lands under your body with a whole foot landing that springs you back into the air.

When you run in heeled cushioned shoes they give you the licence to get lazy with technique, often leading to over striding and with a heavy heel strike.
Your bodies natural spring is lost through the foot being on the ground for too long.
Your leg and foot out in front of you acts as a brake on the forward running motion.

Many people ‘get away’ with this technique ... though 75% of runners report an injury every year.

When you land with your foot out in front and a straight leg like the guy with shoes on here, yes, your foot gets cushioned but those forces don’t disappear. They go straight up into the next joints... knee, hip and lower back. With the leg straight out like this they’re hardly in a position to absorb shock.

Sure, running barefoot or in natural footwear is not without issues... primarily because most of us have been conditioned into running techniques with heavily heeled, supportive and cushioned shoes and it can be difficult to revert.

Good news is that with the right approach, attitude, guidance, time and patience, running naturally is available to almost everyone.
