SSI International is aware of the serious allegations circulating on social media concerning an SSI instructor.

We strictly condemn the mistreatment of marine life under any circumstances. Under SSI standards, all members are bound to follow the Responsible Diver Code, requiring compliance with all applicable regulations, statutes, and codes. SSI Instructors are expected to lead by example, follow local laws, and act as true ocean ambassadors who treat the underwater world with utmost respect.

SSI has opened a Quality Management System (QMS) case regarding this matter and takes these reports very seriously. We are currently reviewing all submitted materials to establish the facts, and we will take appropriate action in accordance with SSI standards and procedures.

We appreciate your concern for marine life and your commitment to responsible diving practices. Please note that we will not share further details regarding this case on social media while the review process is ongoing.

Did you know a small flatfish helped inspire research into shark repellents?

The finless sole (Pardachirus marmoratus) has a fascinating way of defending itself. When threatened, specialized glands in its skin release a milky secretion containing compounds called pardaxins, which have been shown in experiments to deter sharks.

This unusual natural defense caught the attention of scientists, who studied the fish and its secretions in the search for potential shark-repellent substances.

Proof that in the ocean, you don’t always need size, speed or strength on your side. Sometimes chemistry does the job!
