✨ Meet D1 Pilot Thomas!

Whether he’s launching at World Championships, hiking in the mountains, or racing on the sim, Thomas brings the same passion and competitive spirit to everything he does.

Thomas Truffo is from Turin, northern Italy 🇮🇹, he is 38 years old and has been flying RC models since he was just four or five years old.

🚀 How did you get into RC flying?
Thanks to my dad, who has always been passionate about gliding and model aircraft, I was introduced to the world of RC flying at a very young age. My first radio-controlled model was when I was around four or five. Until I was about ten, I was much more into RC cars and even competed in several races. One day, my father had me try flying an electric glider. At first, I was scared—but then I realized that this was what I wanted to do. In 2003, I entered the competitive world of F3J, and I haven’t stopped since.

✈️ When did you start flying the D1, and why?
I started flying the D1 in 2024. For obvious reasons, the models I used to fly were almost impossible to find, as they were produced by Vladimir’s Model. Besides, I felt I needed a new challenge. I considered several options, but when I saw the D1 design, I immediately thought it was exactly what I was looking for. After exchanging a few messages with Arjian, the first one arrived at my house. I’ll admit that getting started wasn’t easy. With the D1, you have to change your mindset—but once you understand what it can do and how it works, a whole new world opens up in front of you!

🏆 What’s your biggest achievement with the D1?
Without a doubt, the 2025 World Championships in Tarp. For the first time, I managed to qualify for the Fly-Offs at an F3K event and achieved an excellent result, far exceeding my expectations. It wasn’t just the result—the entire week of flying was incredible, and I have to admit that flying the D1 was a lot of fun. I also had a great experience at the European Championships in Romania, where I made it into the Fly-Offs once again. I’m already looking forward to the next season—and hopefully improving on my results!

⛰️ Besides RC flying, what are your other hobbies?
During the winter, I often spend my evenings racing in sim racing competitions or using a flight simulator. When I’m not at home, I love going to the mountains and hiking with friends.

💙 Anything you’d like to say to the RC community or someone thinking about their first D1?
Just go for it. The D1 might feel different at first, but once you get it, you’ll love it. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn from other pilots, and enjoy every flight. That’s what this hobby is all about: great people, great friendships, and always learning something new.

✨ Meet D1 Pilot Nikola!
Whether he’s flying, building, or making people smile with his sense of humor, Nikola brings passion to everything he does.

Nikola Stojković is from Belgrade, Serbia 🇷🇸, he is 41 years old and has been flying RC models for more than 20 years.

🚀 How did you get into RC flying?

What started as a childhood hobby became a lifelong passion. Over the years I’ve competed in different classes, represented Serbia as a member of the F3K National Team, and met amazing people from all around the world. I’m also proud to be part of AK Ćuprija, a club that has played a huge role in my F3K journey.

✈️ What do you like most about flying the D1S?

I like how honest the airplane is. It rewards good decisions, but if you make a mistake, it politely reminds you that the pilot is usually the weakest component of the system. 😄

🏆 Do you fly competitions, or do you mostly fly for fun?

Both. Competitions motivate me to become a better pilot, but some of my favorite days are simply flying with friends. My biggest competitive achievement is probably winning the famous “localhost Championship”… mainly because I’m usually the only competitor. 😄

🛠️ Besides RC flying, what are your other hobbies, or what do you do for work?

I’m a Senior DevOps Engineer, so during the week I debug cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes, and automation. On weekends I debug my launch technique… and after every training session I usually have to debug my shoulder and knees as well. 😄 I also founded Serbia’s first RC aeromodelling forum, RCFly4um, and continue supporting the RC community through different projects.

💙 Is there anything you’d like to say to the RC community or to someone thinking about buying their first D1S?

Just get out and fly. Ask questions, learn from other pilots, and don’t be afraid of making mistakes—every experienced F3K pilot has a collection of repaired airplanes. 😄

If you’re thinking about buying your first D1S, I can honestly recommend it.
LEGO has an upper age limit of 99 years. D1S doesn’t. 😁🤙

It’s a fantastic airplane, but what makes it truly special is the passion of the people behind it. In the end, that’s what this hobby is all about: great people, great friendships, and always learning something new.

👉 Four questions for D1 Pilot Ivan!

For Ivan Djeorgievski, model flying isn’t just a hobby—it’s been a passion since childhood. Today, he’s sharing a bit of his story and what makes the D1 so special to him.

🚀 How did you get into RC flying?

I got into RC flying when I was around six years old. At the time, RC equipment was difficult to find and very expensive. My father, a top modeler, introduced me to the hobby, and I quickly fell in love with what I still believe is the best hobby in the world.

✈️ What do you like most about flying the D1?

The people behind the D1 clearly have an outstanding understanding of aerodynamics. The attention to detail is fascinating, and I especially admire that they are constantly working to improve the model even further. Without a doubt, the D1 is the most beautiful competition glider, and I could write a book about how it flies.

🏆 Do you fly competitions, or do you mostly fly for fun?

I compete in multiple categories because I have a very strong competitive spirit, but I also enjoy flying purely for fun. One of my proudest achievements was becoming Vice World Champion and World Champion in the S8E category.

🛩️ Besides RC flying, what are your other hobbies, and what do you do for work?

Model aviation is my main hobby. I also enjoy building model aircraft and repairing anything related to technology. Professionally, I’ve been working in aviation for 23 years, which perfectly matches my passion for flying.

In just two weeks, the best F3K pilots in Europe will meet for the European Championship.

We’re proud that the D1S will be part of the competition once again—designed for demanding conditions and trusted by top pilots.

Good luck to everyone preparing for the big event. See you at the flight line! 🇪🇺✈️
