Did you know that Insufficient physical activity is the 4th leading risk factor for mortality?

Approximately 3.2 million deaths and 32.1 million DALYs (representing about 2.1% of global DALYs) each year are attributable to insufficient physical activity.

Physical inactivity or being sedentary is when you don't move your body for long periods of time. This can include sitting or lying on the sofa watching TV, and sitting at a desk or computer.

Being physically active doesn't mean you need to join a gym or run a marathon.

The WHO defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Physical activity refers to all movement including during leisure time, for transport to get to and from places, or as part of a person's work.

Not getting enough physical activity can lead to heart disease, even for people who have no other risk factors. It can also increase the likelihood of developing other heart disease risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes.

Here there are few tips to improve your physical activity:

1) go for a walk on your lunch break.
2) park further away from a store/home/work place.
3) stand up and do 10 squat every hour while you are at work.
4) schedule fitness time in your calendar.
5) Stan up during phone calls.

Cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for coronary heart disease and is associated with impaired postprandial metabolism. Acute exercise reduces postprandial lipemia and improves other coronary heart disease risk markers in nonsmokers. Less is known about responses in cigarette smokers.

In a recent study in the journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise Tareq Alotaibi and collegaues found that acute moderate-intensity running reduced postprandial triacylglycerol, insulin, and resting arterial blood pressure the day after exercise in male cigarette smokers and nonsmokers.

These findings highlight the ability of acute exercise to augment the postprandial metabolic health of cigarette smokers and nonsmokers.

“Slow components” of heart rate kinetics, occurring also during moderate-intensity constant work rate exercise, represent a problem for exercise prescription at fixed HR values. This problem, described in young healthy subjects, could be more pronounced in obese patients.

In this recent study from the journal of Medicine and Science in Sports and Science, sixteen male obese patients were tested before and after a 3-wk multidisciplinary body mass reduction program, entailing moderate-intensity exercise.
