GLP-1 weight-loss medications alone are not enough.
ECSS has joined 11 leading international peak bodies representing exercise and sports science in calling for Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) to be a core part of obesity care.
Why?
The use of weight-loss medications has rapidly moved into mainstream care and evidence shows that 20% - 40% of weight lost with these medications can come from lean tissue, including skeletal muscle.
Muscle drives strength and mobility. Losing it can mean reduced physical function, greater frailty risk and weight regain after treatment ends.
CEPs are university-trained allied health professionals who prescribe exercise to help people maintain their muscle and strength. They design and supervise evidence-based exercise programmes, keeping people active and independent as they age.
It’s time for exercise physiology to be recognised as a standard part of weight-loss medication treatment.
