You’re training in the wrong shoes. And it’s costing you gains.

I see it every single day in the gym. Someone squatting 100kg in running shoes. Doing box jumps in Vaporfly. Deadlifting in Air Max 90s.

Running shoes are built to move you FORWARD. They have cushion. They have a curved sole. They compress under load. That’s exactly what you DON’T want when you’re trying to push force INTO the ground.

Training shoes are built to move you IN EVERY DIRECTION. Lateral stability. Flat base. Minimal compression. That’s what keeps your knees safe, your power transfer clean, and your lifts honest.

Here’s the breakdown — and WHY each one matters.

🔧 #1 — FREE METCON 7 — The All-Rounder ($120)

WHY THIS SHOE: Most people go to the gym and do a bit of everything. Some squats, some push-ups, maybe a HIIT circuit, maybe 10 minutes on the bike. You need a shoe that does all of that without failing at any of it.

The Free Metcon 7 is Nike’s answer to that problem. The sole is split into two zones — the forefoot uses Nike Free technology, which bends and flexes naturally with your foot during burpees, mountain climbers, and lateral movements. The heel uses Metcon-level density, which stays flat and firm during squats, lunges, and presses.

The base is 116mm wide in the forefoot. For context, most running shoes sit around 108mm. That extra 8mm doesn’t sound like much — but it’s the difference between feeling planted and feeling like you’re balancing on a rail.

WHO IT’S FOR: The 80% of gym-goers who do mixed sessions. Nike Training app users. Boot camp and class people. Anyone who wants ONE shoe that handles everything from warm-up to cool-down.

WHO IT’S NOT FOR: Pure powerlifters or Olympic lifters who need maximum heel elevation and zero flex.

WHY THIS SHOE: The Metcon 9 went too far. Too stiff. Too heavy. Too much like a lifting shoe pretending to be a trainer. Nike heard the feedback and stripped the Metcon 10 down to what matters.

They dropped 65 grams. They added ReactX foam — the same tech in the Pegasus running line — which gives you actual comfort during high-impact movements without losing ground contact. The Hyperlift insert raises your heel during squats, which

Every shoe has a job. Stop running in the wrong one ☝🏻! I’ll help you!

This is my 2026 Nike rotation — 5 shoes, 5 roles, zero overlap. Each one picked for a reason, backed by real specs, not hype.

🚀 ALPHAFLY 3 — Race Day
198g. Carbon plate + Air Zoom pods. 75% energy return. This shoe is a launch pad. You don’t train in it. You race in it. Period

🔧 VOMERO PLUS — Do It All
281g of full ZoomX. Light enough for tempo, soft enough for recovery. If you’re buying one shoe — this is it. My 2026 surprise favorite.

☁️ VOMERO PREMIUM — Recovery
The tallest stack Nike has ever made. 55mm. Feels like running on clouds. Heavy? Yes. But on easy days, that’s the point. Your legs will thank you tomorrow.

⚔️ ZOOM FLY 6 — HYROX / Tempo
The HYROX weapon. Carbon plate for propulsion on the run. SR-02 base for grip and stability at every station. You sacrifice 30 seconds running. You gain minutes everywhere else.

🐴 PEGASUS 42 — Everyday Training
40+ years. 1000km+ durability. $140. ReactX foam + full-length Air Zoom unit. Not exciting — just reliable. Shows up every single day with zero drama. The shoe you don’t think about, and that’s exactly the point. If you’re just starting your Nike Running journey, start here.

— BONUS PICKS —

🛡️ VOMERO 18 — The OG Daily Trainer
298g. ZoomX top layer + ReactX base. 44/34mm stack. 18 generations of the Vomero and it’s still one of the most trusted daily trainers in the game. More cushion than the Pegasus, less bounce than the Plus. If you want a cushioned cruiser for easy days that also handles long runs — the Vomero 18 has been doing this longer than most shoes have existed. The icon of the max-cushion pillar.

Most people own 1 pair and use it for everything.
That’s like using a screwdriver as a hammer.

Know your rotation. Train smarter. Run longer.

Save this for your next shoe purchase.

One year can change a lot.

Last year in Berlin, I didn’t finish.

This year, in one of the hottest weekends of the year, I crossed the finish line with no penalties, no disqualification and a much stronger version of myself.

It wasn’t a podium performance.

But it was proof of progress.

My third HYROX race as a solo athlete and probably the one I’m most proud of so far.

The biggest lesson?

Consistency beats motivation.
Every session counts.
Every early morning matters.
Every setback teaches something.

Now it’s time to recover, analyse the race and get back to work.

The goal isn’t to be perfect.

The goal is to keep improving.

Huge thanks to the Nike Training team for the support and energy throughout the journey. 🙏

The Idea: Why Strength Training Matters for Longevity 🧙‍♂️
Most people train for the next vacation or a specific weight. The science of longevity is about training for the next decade. Strength is the ultimate currency for aging well.
1. Metabolic Defense: Muscle is your most active tissue; it makes you metabolically “expensive” and resistant to disease.
2. Structural Stability: Strong muscles don’t just move bones; they pull on them, stimulating bone density and preventing fractures during falls (the #1 cause of fatal injury for adults 40+).
3. Hormonal Resilience: Correct resistance training builds a hormonal buffer against the natural decline of aging.
We’re not training to be bodybuilders; we’re training to be 80-year-olds who can do their own groceries and walk up stairs without help.
