30th TAFISA World Congress Organising Committee Officially Launched

The Botswana National Sport Commission, through the 30th TAFISA World Congress Secretariat, today officially launched the Organising Committee for the 30th TAFISA World Congress during a press conference held at the BFA Auditorium.

The media briefing provided an opportunity to share key updates on preparations for the Congress, while highlighting the significance of the TAFISA Sport for All movement and the exciting programme of activities leading up to this global gathering. The 30th TAFISA World Congress will take place from 18–20 October 2027 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) in Gaborone.

The newly launched Organising Committee brings together experienced representatives from government, sport, tourism, investment, local authorities and international Sport for All structures. The Committee will be chaired by Mr. Molefhi Kannemeyer Obenne, supported by members including the TAFISA Africa Vice-President Ms. Boineelo Hardy, Mr. Jean-Francois Laurent, Mr. Godfrey Bose, Mr. Edgar Leandro, Ms. Carol Kgafela, Mr. Peaceful Seleka, Mr. Thuso Palai, Mr. Obakeng Ngwigwa, Ms. Mosidi Batsalelwang, Ms. Game Mothibi, and Congress General Manager Mr. Thuto Molebatsi, who will serve as Ex-Officio.

As only the second African country to host the TAFISA World Congress after South Africa in 2001, Botswana has a remarkable opportunity to strengthen its position as a continental and global leader in Sport for All. The Congress will also provide a powerful platform to showcase African innovation, indigenous games, active-living initiatives and Botswana’s capacity to host world-class events.

With more than 500 international delegates expected, the Congress is set to unlock opportunities for knowledge exchange, sports diplomacy, tourism, investment, skills development and international partnerships. More importantly, it will contribute to building healthier, more inclusive and active communities across Botswana and beyond.

Beyond the Congress itself, Botswana’s ambition is to establish a lasting legacy through initiatives such as Active Cities, national fitness programmes, leadership development, active transport and community participation, positioning the country as Africa’s Sport for All hub by 2030.

BNSC and 30th TAFISA World Congress Strengthen Collaboration with Gaborone City Council

Earlier today, the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) CEO, Mr Olebile Sikwane, and the 30th TAFISA World Congress Organising Committee Chairperson, Molefhi Kannemeyer Obenne, paid a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Gaborone City Council (GCC), Hon. Oarabile Motlaleng, to strengthen collaboration ahead of the Congress.

Discussions focused on city tourism, sports infrastructure development, climate-conscious planning, and legacy initiatives such as the Active Cities Programme. The engagement also highlighted opportunities to attract international support, expand community fitness facilities, and position Gaborone as a vibrant, active, and welcoming host city.

The BNSC CEO and the 30th TAFISA World Congress Organising Committee Chairperson were accompanied by BNSC Sport Development Director, Mr Peaceful Seleka; Congress General Manager, Mr Thuto Molebatsi; and Marketing and Communications Coordinator, Mr Karabo Kwadibana.

TAFISA & 30th TAFISA World Congress Secretariat Strengthens Stakeholder Engagement

Earlier today, TAFISA & the 30th TAFISA World Congress Secretariat & TAFISA intensified its stakeholder engagement efforts through a courtesy visit to the Gaborone City Council Acting Town Clerk, Ms. Mosidi Batsalelwang, and GCC principals.

The engagement provided an opportunity to explore potential partnership areas, formally introduce the 30th TAFISA World Congress, and highlight TAFISA programmes that can benefit Gaborone City Council and Botswana at large.

30th TAFISA World Congress and NSAs stakeholder engagement successfully held

Today, the 30th TAFISA World Congress Organising Committee and Secretariat hosted a stakeholder engagement session with National Sport Associations (NSAs) to provide an overview of the Congress, scheduled to take place from 18 to 20 October 2027 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC).

Delivering the welcome remarks, Organising Committee Chairperson Mr Molefhi Kannemeyer Obenne thanked the NSAs for responding to the call and taking part in the engagement. He noted that the session provided an opportunity for National Sport Associations to learn more about TAFISA, the Congress, and the benefits that hosting this global event will bring to Botswana. He further encouraged NSAs to support the Sport for All mission and incorporate its principles into their programmes.

TAFISA Senior Consultant Ms Game Mothibi provided background on TAFISA and highlighted the socio-economic and health benefits of Sport for All, including evidence-based insights from UNESCO. She encouraged NSAs to join the TAFISA movement, noting that it presents meaningful opportunities for growth, collaboration, and community impact.

Providing an update on the Congress, 30th TAFISA World Congress General Manager Mr Thuto Molebatsi shared that preparations are well underway. He emphasised the value of TAFISA in building capacity among NSAs leaders and encouraged associations to rally behind the initiative. He also invited NSAs to propose programmes they would like the Secretariat to consider implementing as part of the Sport for All agenda.

Mr Molebatsi further highlighted the importance of working towards certifying Gaborone as an Active City and adopting a coordinated national approach to advancing Sport for All.

In his closing remarks, Organising Committee member Mr Obakeng Ngwigwa, thanked the NSAs for their participation and encouraged them to play an active role in supporting the Sport for All movement and contributing to the successful delivery of the 30th TAFISA World Congress.
