When Novak talks about his son playing tennis, his message is clear:

“He’s good. Look, I want to be his father, not his coach. If this is the journey he chooses, I’ll support him one million percent, every step of the way. I think tennis is a great school of life. If my son wants to play tennis, it is a great idea to try to become a professional. I would advise it.”

The role of a parent is to support their child and show them how much they believe in them. But when the parent also becomes the coach, they often have to take that extra step with them. They want to be involved, but that can be very dangerous.

Of course, it works in some cases. There are great examples of parents who succeeded as coaches. But when a parent is also the coach, there is no emotional distance. They go through the same negativity, and that can damage the relationship.

The relationship between a parent and a child is much more important than the relationship between a coach and a player. Novak can still use his tennis knowledge by choosing the right people around his son. That is the best way to help him.
