Posh word for kitchen on a boat, that’s all it is. Somehow it always sounds more impressive than “let’s go look at where they made the toast.” 😂

Vis was impeccable in there today. Genuinely stunning. When we arrived, anyway... give it a few minutes with fins and bubbles and that story changes fast. 🤣

But the star of the show for me, every single time, is the Hobart mixer. Sat there since 1980, still looking like it’s ready to knock out a batch of dough. Every time I swim past it I think about the crew who used it, making bread on a working cargo ship with no idea what was coming. That’s the bit that gets me about the Zenobia. It’s not just a wreck, it’s a moment in time nobody chose to leave behind. ⚙️

One of the cleanest cabs on the Zenobia! ⛴️

Loads of them have been broken into over the years, or lost under collapsed wreckage. Currents, rust, divers who weren’t as careful as they should’ve been. That’s just what forty odd years underwater does to a truck cab.

This one’s different though. Still one of my favourites, and honestly I don’t fully know why she’s survived so well 😅

Doors still on. Windows still in. Little details still sat exactly where they were left in 1980. You shine a torch in and for a second it doesn’t feel like a wreck, it feels like someone just stepped out and’ll be back any minute 🤯

That’s the bit people don’t expect about the Zenobia. It’s not just a big metal shape to swim round. It’s £200 million of cargo and everyday life, all still down there. A time capsule, not a shipwreck in the usual sense.

And it’s exactly why I dive progressively with people. You don’t get thrown at the good stuff on dive one. You build up to it, dive by dive, until you’re ready for cabs like this one. Makes it mean more when you get there, trust me 💪🏽

Light failure. 😱😱

Wreck diving has different levels. Every single one of them needs the same thing though: preparation. Spares of everything, to hand, all the time. No exceptions.

Lucky one for me this time. My video light died with the exit already in sight. Three minutes earlier and that’s a very different dive. 🤿

Backup light out and running in 15 seconds. Good, but that’s not really the point. The point is it was there, ready, for exactly this happening. That’s what prep means, and honestly, it’s what keeps me loving this job as much as I do.

There’s something about being deep inside the Zenobia with nothing but a torch (or 4😅) and your own breathing that makes you very aware of every single breath you take. Suddenly your air consumption is immaculate. Funny how that works. 🤣🤣

But in all seriousness, nearly 50 years on the seabed and this wreck is still giving. Still revealing. Still finding new ways to make you slow down, switch on, and pay attention. 🌊🌊🌊

That’s the thing about the Zenobia. She’s not finished. Not even close. The more time you put into her the more she gives back. New details, new routes, new moments that remind you why this is considered one of the greatest wrecks on the planet. ⛴️⛴️⛴️

Almost 50 years down there and she’s still got plenty left to give. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

The original oil gauges. Still mounted. Still pointing at numbers that made sense to someone in 1980. Accurate now? Probably not. 😂😂

But still there. Still extraordinary. And completely invisible to anyone who doesn’t think to look up. 🤯🤯

This is the Zenobia. Details everywhere. Above you, below you, around every corner. Most people miss them because they’re following a route instead of actually looking. 🌊🌊🌊

Don’t breathe! 😱🫁

I know. The air pocket looks tempting. You’re underwater, there’s a pocket of gas right above your head, and your brain starts doing the maths. 😅😅

Don’t. 🚫

The air inside these pockets isn’t the fresh stuff. As the Zenobia corrodes, the rust process consumes the oxygen inside the wreck over time. What’s left is mostly nitrogen and other gases that have been sitting in a sealed pocket of a shipwreck for 45 years. Taking your regulator out and breathing that could quite literally be your last breath. 💀💀

It looks harmless. It really doesn’t look harmless. And that’s exactly what makes it dangerous. 😤😤

This is why diving with an experienced guide matters. Not just for the routes and the interesting bits, but for knowing what not to do and making sure the people diving with you know it too. 🙏🏼🙏🏼

The Zenobia is extraordinary. But she demands respect. Every single dive. 💪🏽💪🏽
