A Must-Read for Home, Club and School Users

Many users feel confused when choosing sports equipment: it looks like stainless steel, but why does it rust quickly? Is it really stainless steel? Is it 304 or another grade?
You don’t need professional tools. The Likon Sports Equipment Lab shares a few simple, easy-to-use methods to tell austenitic and martensitic stainless steel apart, and avoid low-quality steel at a glance.
1. Test with a Magnet – Instantly Distinguish the Two Main Types of Stainless Steel
This is the most practical and reliable method, easy for anyone to use.
• Not magnetic / very weakly magnetic
Usually austenitic stainless steel (commonly 304, 316). It has excellent rust resistance, stands up to sweat and moisture, ideal for fitness gear, outdoor equipment and public school facilities.
• Strongly magnetic – magnet sticks firmly
Usually martensitic stainless steel (410, 420, etc.). High hardness and load-bearing capacity, often used for dumbbells, weight plates and other strength components.
Note: Some 304 steel may show slight magnetism after bending or processing, which is normal and does not affect quality.
2. Scratch & Wipe – Reveal Real vs. Fake Stainless Steel
1. Hard Object Scratch Test
Gently scratch the surface with a key or coin:
• Genuine stainless steel: shallow scratches, no rust or discoloration; barely visible after wiping.
• Fake stainless steel / ordinary iron: deep scratches, quickly turns yellow or rusty, and deteriorates with use.
2. Baking Soda Scratch Test (Gentle Home Version)
Mix baking soda with water into a paste and rub repeatedly on the surface:
• High-quality stainless steel: scratch-resistant, stays bright and rust-free.
• Low-quality steel: scratches easily, may even show rust spots, exposing poor material.
This gentle method is perfect for home, club and school inspections without damaging equipment.
3. Judge by Hardness & Feel
• Austenitic (304/316)
Feels relatively “soft”, tough and not brittle. Suitable for equipment frames, posts and public fitness machines.
• Martensitic (400 series)
Feels harder and heavier, wear-resistant and pressure-resistant. Ideal for weights and strength components.
No professional hardness tester needed – you can clearly feel the difference by holding, weighing and gently tapping.
