YOGA CAN BE TRANSFORMATIVE IN MIDLIFE, offering numerous physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Here are some major ways in which yoga can enrich your self-care routine:

PHYSICAL
· As we age, maintaining flexibility and muscle strength becomes essential. Yoga promotes muscles stretching and strengthening, helping to combat stiffness and improve overall mobility.
· Many yoga poses focus on balance, which can help reduce the risk of falls - an important consideration as we age.
· Improve joint function, often aiding conditions such as frozen shoulders and arthritis.
· Enhance cardiovascular function, lower blood pressure, and improve circulation.

MENTAL
· Midlife can be a period of significant stress due to career, family dynamics, or health concerns. Yoga incorporates mindfulness and breathing techniques that promote relaxation and help you look at life from a different perspective.
· Improve concentration and mental clarity.

MYTHS you should STOP ✋🏼 believing about starting yoga in midlife:
1) “I am too old.” - You are not! You can do yoga as long as you live.
2) “I am not flexible.” - Yoga actually helps inflexible people become more flexible, this is one of the goals.

My background in Yin Yoga:
After years of practicing and teaching dynamic styles of yoga (Yang), I always had the curiosity to explore a more accessible, slower-paced practice that will therapeutically benefit people of all ages and physical abilities (Yin). Fortunately, a year ago, the opportunity was presented to explore and learn Yin Yoga from the source. Attending Sarah Powers’ teacher training in Bali was a lovely experience that not only gave me the essential elements of practicing and teaching Yin Yoga but it also gave me the tools to deepen my seated contemplative practice. Sarah Powers is an acclaimed yoga and meditation teacher, she was one of the first students of Paul Grilley and responsible for bringing today’s version of yin yoga mainstream. In her teachings, she incorporates her studies in transpersonal psychology, as well as her in-depth training in the Vipassana, Ta***ic and Dzogchen practices of Buddhism.

Why practice Yin Yoga? 為什麼要練習陰瑜伽?
If you are a very active person, Yin Yoga may be a useful way to help you find more balance in your life. Incorporating Yin Yoga into your routine can offer many benefits:

1️⃣ Yin Yoga offers an opportunity to slow down your hectic lifestyle, reconnect, and discover how to cultivate patience in long-held poses (3-5 minutes). This extended stillness during a Yin sequenced class will help you reduce accumulated stress and anxiety from rushing all day and will develop your ability to decelerate and ameliorate your quality of restful sleep.

2️⃣ According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each individual has vital life force energy, known as Qi 氣, circulating the body in channels known as meridians 經絡. Qi blockage manifests as pain, body tension, and joint dysfunction. Yin Yoga gently stresses the joints to loosen that stagnation and restores the harmonious flow of Qi and blood.

3️⃣ Yin Yoga is a way to get to know our physical limitations. Becoming more attentive when exploring your bodily edges in each pose, is a step to reconnecting with yourself gradually. Our connective tissues respond best to a slow, steady load, which is why we hold the poses for longer.

4️⃣ Yin trains us to surrender to the process and let go. The excess of self-control sometimes leads us to pathways of too much rigidity. This practice is all about recognizing it, letting go expectations, and seeing what unfolds.

5️⃣ Yin Yoga is highly influenced by TCM, the poses stimulate and remove blockages in the meridians, which in turn balances the body's internal organs and systems.

6️⃣ The Yin poses can be combined with pressure or massage at some acupoints. These points are the same ones used in acupuncture, and therefore have specific functions and indications. E.g. Applying pressure at Kidney-1 湧泉穴, located at the sole of each foot, relieves agitation and anxiety. It’s also helpful in clearing excess heat.

Yoga teaches us to navigate our lives with a greater sense of who we are.
The asana postures are not the destination, but they help us to prepare our body and mind for sitting practice, which will greatly support the life we want to create for ourselves.

Shall we always remember that Yoga is a lot more than just stretching, wearing fancy apparel, and performing pretzel poses.

Yoga is self-discovery.
Is love.
Is presence.
Is connection.
Is discipline.
Is surrender.
Is self-acceptance.

Happy yoga day!

When the Ashtanga Immersion course concluded yesterday, one of the participants said “I wish I can keep this good sensation after practicing yoga all the time.” This is free and accessible, all of us can! We only need to commit dedicating every day a little bit of time to our practice. Consistency is the secret to changing habits, good habits are what help us to thrive.

It doesn’t matter what style of yoga you practice, the important is that when you do, do it with full presence by paying attention to your breath and the corporal sensations when you move.

I was very happy to share the past 2 weekends with this lovely group and together learn how we can use yoga to be aware of the ‘autopilot mode’ and move more and more towards being more present and more complete in our lives.

Thank you very much to all the ladies that attended the course and recommended it to others. ♥️ Your support was very important to be able to deliver all the content in Chinese! Challenges always make us grow.
