How does an ancient Chinese fighting art remain alive after centuries of change?
In this new episode, I travel through Shanxi, the birthplace of Xing Yi Quan, to explore one of China’s oldest and most direct martial traditions.
From the stillness of standing meditation to the explosive force of the Five Element Fists and the instinctive power of the animal forms, Xing Yi Quan reveals a method built on structure, intention, and relentless forward pressure.
But Shanxi’s story is not only written in training halls. It lives in its endless varieties of noodles, its famous aged vinegar, and the ancient banking city of Pingyao. Here, merchants once crossed vast distances under the protection of Xing Yi Quan practitioners, helping carry this fighting art far beyond its birthplace.
In Yuncheng, I meet Xing Yi Quan inheritor Cao Bing, who demonstrates how this internal martial art is applied under pressure—and why its principles remain so relevant today.
This is a journey through ancient China, hidden martial history, legendary origins, Taoist temples, and a fighting system that has survived because it never stopped evolving.

Can medieval swordsmanship from Europe help unlock the story of weapons forged in ancient China?
In Shanghai, an unexpected meeting of martial traditions is taking place. Chinese practitioners are studying the longsword systems of Germany and Italy, not simply to recreate European combat, but to look at Chinese martial arts with fresh eyes. Through HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), ancient manuals, and traditional Chinese blade work, old questions begin to feel alive again: What did these weapons truly do? How were they used? And what knowledge may still be waiting to be rediscovered?
That search leads from Shanghai’s training halls to its streets, where cultures, people, and ideas have always crossed paths. It is the same spirit that made it possible for a foreigner to build a Kung Fu school here and keep it growing for more than fifteen years: a shared passion that can travel beyond language and borders.
But the past is not only found in books or graceful sword forms. In a nearby water town, the reality of historical combat comes alive in steel and armour. Ming-style armour, full-contact Buhurt fighting, and handmade reconstructions based on Chinese sources reveal a side of martial history that is powerful, demanding, and wonderfully human.
This documentary explores what happens when tradition is not treated as something frozen in time, but as something to question, test, share, and keep alive.
Watch the full video and step into a world where ancient weapons, modern fighters, and two martial cultures meet in the most unexpected way.

What if one of the martial arts that influenced generations of Chinese kung fu masters was also one of the least known today?
In this episode of KungFu-Wise, we travel to Beijing to uncover the hidden world of “Shuai Jiao”, China's ancient wrestling tradition. Born from centuries of military practice and later embraced by ordinary people, this art has quietly shaped many northern Chinese martial arts—yet its story remains largely unknown outside China.
Our journey takes us from a traditional wrestling competition to the school of Master Wang Tongqing, one of the practitioners dedicated to keeping this heritage alive. Through training, conversations, and a heartfelt invitation into his home, we discover that martial arts are not only about techniques, but about relationships, values, and the people who carry a tradition forward.
But behind this beautiful heritage lies another reality.
Inside one of China's demanding martial arts schools, we meet young athletes who train every day with extraordinary determination. For some, martial arts are not simply a dream of competition—they are a hope for a different future. They face discipline, sacrifice, and uncertainty, chasing a dream that only a few will ever achieve.
Their story reveals a side of martial arts rarely seen: the struggles behind the victories, and the human stories hidden behind every movement.
This is more than the story of a fighting system. It is a journey through tradition, resilience, and the people who refuse to let their dreams disappear.
Join us for an unforgettable exploration of Shuai Jiao, where ancient traditions meet modern struggles, and every victory comes at a price.
