Every piece of kendo armor worn anywhere in the world today traces its lineage to one man, one school, and one decade: 1711-1715.
The man was Naganuma Shirozaemon Kunisato. The school was Kashima Shinden Jikishinkage-ryu. And we know it is true because it is written on his gravestone.

This is School 8 of 10 in our series. The founder, Matsumoto Bizen-no-Kami Naokatsu (1467-1524), was a hereditary custodian of the Kashima Grand Shrine and teacher to Tsukahara Bokuden (School 2) and Kamiizumi Nobutsuna (School 3). Jikishinkage-ryu sits at the quiet center from which much of the tradition radiated.
Nearly two centuries later, the 8th headmaster Naganuma Kunisato (1688-1767) developed the first standardized bogu armor - adding a metal grille to the men and cotton coverings to the kote, then building a systematic training method around it. The gravestone inscription confirms it explicitly.

Before this, full-speed training risked serious injury. Once Naganuma's bogu spread, other schools adopted it. The shogunate's martial academy incorporated it. It was eventually codified as the equipment of modern kendo.
The 14th headmaster, Sakakibara Kenkichi (1830-1894), organized famous public demonstrations that kept kenjutsu alive during the Meiji period. Sokaku Takeda - founder of Daito-ryu and root of modern aikido - trained under him directly. Shindo Yoshin-ryu also descends from here.

This is School 8 of 10 in our series: The Lineages That Shaped the Sword. Next week: Ono-ha Itto-ryu - the oldest surviving branch of Itto-ryu, still active under its 18th generation headmaster in Tokyo. Follow the page so you don't miss it. Full article at https://kenjutsuworld.com/?p=1183
