Solo Jazz Grooves and Body Movement
In this class, we will explore how we to express different rhythms and grooves through various body movements. We will integrate this into our improvisation, as well as into some important steps of the jazz vocabulary. The class will include guided body movement and groove explorations, but will also encourage you to experiment on your own and within the group.
This class is meant for everyone who wants to dive into how to connect their body movement to jazz music. No prior knowledge of jazz steps is required, and those already familiar with solo jazz are welcome to challenge themselves and find new ways of interpreting the steps they know.
These principles are deeply rooted in the history and culture of jazz and the African diaspora. Under the oppressive conditions of slavery and segregation, the reclamation and expression of the body became an important part of Black cultural survival, resistance, and the search for physical, spiritual, and psychological freedom, through both individual expression and connection to the community.
Dates: 29.09.26 – 03.11.26

In this workshop, we will explore how groove can be embodied in different ways and how it connects us to jazz music. While dancing and improvising, we will practise staying grounded, finding ease in different body movements, and expressing what we hear and feel in the music. Join Emma to deepen your connection to the music, your body, and your own way of dancing! This workshop is open level, so everyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience.

Ella Fitzgerald
The name “Ella’s Fellas” is inspired by Ella Fitzgerald’s iconic 1960 performance of “Mack the Knife” in Berlin. Taking on a song often associated with male performers, Ella delivered a groundbreaking rendition, saying, “We haven’t heard a girl sing it.” During the performance, she forgot the lyrics but improvised with brilliant spontaneity, singing the line “Ella and her fellas.” This moment symbolized breaking free from male-dominated norms and celebrated creativity, freedom, and the joy of embracing the unexpected.
We do have a full page dedicated to her on our webpage. You can find it on Ellasfellas.ch > Ella Fitzgerald.
