Limiting beliefs do not often reveal themselves overtly. Many people ask me how they can know if they even have limiting beliefs.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Well, I can share my experience. I didn’t think I had limiting beliefs and was convinced that the external reality was responsible for most problems.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But who taught me that reality is that way? This is exactly the point: it's your belief system that assigns meaning to situations. And of course, limiting beliefs don’t just wave and say, “Hey, I’m one of your limiting beliefs!” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Limiting beliefs manifest as a trusted internal voice, the one you’ve been hearing in your head as far back as you can remember -- but which has never really done much to help you in the long term. This voice never empowers you. This voice looks for any reason to avoid things it believes aren’t good for you, and the only source of its arguments is your belief system.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So if you want to find out what your limiting beliefs are, the first thing you need to do is observe yourself: what you think and feel and how you behave -- and then challenge those results.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Start with one behavior and track it back to the emotion and thought that triggered it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What argument do you make for that behavior? What is your reasoning? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Journal these questions and answers and notice what emerges. Apply conscious reasoning and then rewrite the answers in more empowering terms. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I know I’m like a broken record, always writing about the subconscious mind but it’s because I believe lasting change only happens when we consciously and consistently repeat our intentions and choices.

New clients often tell me that no matter what they do, they always seem to fall back into old habits. They lose faith in their ability to change when they repeatedly experience setbacks and ask if I myself ever feel angry, sad or anxious.

Of course I face these issues too. Everybody stumbles from time to time; we are human beings, not robots.

The subconscious mind is a record of the past. It is the repository for all our  adopted beliefs and rules; it hosts our shadow and together with the survival mind, ensures our safety. Essentially, the subconscious uses information from the past to predict the future.

All of this exists in the brain as neurologically-hardwired networks of neurons and when thought patterns are repeatedly used, these cable-like electrical pathways become information superhighways.

Whenever we decide to make a change, we create a new neurological connection that is similar to a dirt road. Moving information along this path is not comfortable or efficient at first, and resistance to using this network instead of easier, more established ones is to be expected; particularly when we take into consideration that the brain’s modus operandi is efficiency.

But the more often we choose the new road, the stronger its structure becomes and the less resistance the brain experiences. As the new neurological pathway grows, the former disintegrates.

When we experience a stressful situation though, the subconscious mind takes over and will use habitual networks to operate the flight-or-fight program. This is how we fall back into old behavior.

I know it’s not good news, but we can’t just swap new cables for old ones.

You got to do the work :)

Most of the time when I talk to people, they tell me, “I’m stressed; I have so much to do. But when I have completed this task my stress level will go down.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Guess what? When the task is completed the stress level of that person will most probably not go down. Why? Because the internal program in their head that’s causing the stress will automatically find something else to stress about.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Stress has different sources and many of these are due to unresolved traumas and their coping mechanisms striking in adult life.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have you ever asked yourself what’s really behind your stress response, especially when there is no imminent danger? What is driving your response in that moment?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The list on the graphic is not at all conclusive. Many stress triggers are deeply rooted in the subconscious and run constantly.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But understanding what causes your stress is half the battle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What stresses you out most during your day?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
